Orange County Prep Football : Ocean View Beats Edison for First Time
Ocean View High School finds itself in the surprising position of Big Five Conference playoff contender after defeating Edison, 20-14, in a Sunset League football game Friday night at Westminster.
“This is great. There’s no way to describe this feeling,” said Vic Gutierrez, the Ocean View quarterback who led the Seahawks to their first victory over Edison in seven meetings.
Ocean View, a perennial loser since joining the Sunset League in 1981, is 4-4 overall, 2-1 in the league.
Gutierrez was not intimidated by Edison, which returned heralded running back, Kaleaph Carter, Friday night.
“We beat them as freshmen so we knew we could do it,” said Gutierrez, who had touchdown runs of 25 and 35 yards. “All we had to do was believe in ourselves.”
Ocean View took command early with two touchdowns in the first quarter. After a fumble recovery, Gutierrez led Ocean View on an eight-play, 49-yard scoring drive that David Keiser capped with a six-yard run.
One play after Dean Martinez returned an interception 39 yards to the Edison 32-yard line, the Seahawks scored on a trick play. Gutierrez handed off to Mike Fitzgerald, who handed off to Derek Ogle on an apparent reverse. But Ogle pitched to a wide open Gutierrez, who ran 25 yards for a touchdown.
Edison rallied with two touchdowns in the second quarter on a pair of one-yard dives by Greg Angelovic.
After the teams each lost fumbles to start the second half, Gutierrez scored on a 35-yard scoring run.
Ocean View then relied on its defense. In the fourth quarter, the Seahawks stopped Edison three times on fourth down plays.
The Chargers (1-7, 1-2) had five turnovers and 125 yards in penalties.
