PRO FOOTBALL : Seahawks Get Past Vikings

Dave Krieg passed for three touchdowns, including a 27-yarder to Steve Largent for a key score early in the second half, and backup Jeff Kemp added a 28-yard scoring toss with 1:32 left as the Seattle Seahawks beat the Minnesota Vikings, 28-17, Sunday.

The Krieg-to-Largent touchdown gave Seattle a 21-10 lead.

Krieg passed four yards to Daryl Turner for a first-quarter touchdown and teamed up with running back Curt Warner on a 30-yard touchdown pass play late in the second quarter.

Krieg left the game with 11:20 to go and was replaced by Kemp. Krieg apparently was woozy after being hit on an earlier play.

“I really don’t remember what happened,” Krieg said. “I don’t remember the hit and I don’t remember anything I did out there. All I know is Minnesota is a hard-hitting football team.”

Minnesota scored on a five-yard touchdown run by rookie D.J. Dozier with 6:48 left to cut Seattle’s lead to 21-17. Dozier played because starting Minnesota running back Darrin Nelson suffered a back injury in a fall in his house Tuesday.

The Vikings got the ball back on their own 20 with 3:28 left, but gave up possession at downs on their own 32 with 1:51 left.

Seattle scored three plays later when Kemp passed 28 yards to Raymond Butler for a touchdown.

Seattle posted its third straight victory and improved its record to 5-2, while the Vikings saw their record fall to 3-4. It was the first loss in four starts for the Minnesota regulars this season.

The Seahawks led, 14-10, at halftime, going 94 yards in 13 plays for their second touchdown with 2:14 left in the first half. Krieg found Warner all alone at the five-yard line and he went into the end zone ahead of former teammate John Harris, now the Vikings’ starting free safety.

But Minnesota came back and went 69 yards in 10 plays in just 1:34 to position Chuck Nelson for a 29-yard field goal with 11 seconds to go in the first half.

The teams traded touchdowns in the first quarter. The Seahawks scored the first time they got the ball after Bobby Joe Edmonds returned a punt 30 yards to the Minnesota 24. Five plays later, Seattle got its first touchdown when Krieg lofted a pass to Turner in front of cornerback Carl Lee in the left corner of the end zone.

The Vikings went 79 yards in 8 plays for their first-quarter touchdown, a one-yard sneak by Wilson.

Seven plays into the second half, Largent, who extended his NFL record of catching a pass to 144 consecutive regular-season games, caught his touchdown pass from Krieg on the goal line.

“It was more the throw than anything I did,” said Largent, who caught the ball in front of Lee. “He got caught between playing the ball and playing the receiver, and Dave made a great throw.”
