Murphy Signs a Contract Extension With Atlanta for $2 Million a Year
Outfielder Dale Murphy, one of the few bright lights on the recent Atlanta baseball scene, was eligible to file for free agency, but he extended his contract for three years Wednesday for a reported $2 million a season.
Murphy, 31, batted .295 with 44 home runs and 105 runs batted in last season.
Murphy said the Braves’ inability to reach the National League playoffs since 1982, or the World Series ever during his career, “has been frustrating, but I’m a part of that team and I must do all I can to help.”
Braves owner Ted Turner said, “Dale has been very loyal, and we’ve repaid that loyalty.”
Pitcher Jack Morris, who last year re-signed with the Detroit Tigers after finding no takers in the open market, led a group of four more players to file for free agency.
Also declaring were Angel outfielder Ruppert Jones, San Francisco Giants left-hander Atlee Hammaker and Montreal Expos left-hander Bob McClure.
