An attorney for former light-heavyweight champion Bobby Czyz asked the International Boxing Federation to invalidate Czyz’s Oct. 29 title bout with Charles Williams, contending that referee Carlos Padilla erred twice. Williams stopped Czyz in the ninth round to take the title.

DiVenuta said Padilla’s first mistake came late in the second round when Czyz knocked Williams down just before the bell. The appeal claims that Padilla never began a count and allowed a wobbly Williams to hold the ropes en route to his corner.

The appeal said Padilla also erred in the third round when he gave Williams a standing eight count after Czyz hit him with a solid right that sent Williams into the ropes. DiVenuta said IBF rules say a knockdown can only occur when a boxer is helplessly draped over the ropes or any part of his body other than his feet touch the canvas.
