San Diego High School Playoffs : La Jolla Gains 2-A Team Tennis Final

The La Jolla High School girls’ tennis team rallied to win its final four sets Friday to defeat San Pasqual, 4-3, and advance to today’s San Diego Section 2-A team tennis championship at Poway High School.

San Pasqual won the first three sets and was leading, 5-2, in the third game of the fourth set when La Jolla mounted its comeback. In the No. 2 doubles match, the La Jolla team of Hana Ohkawa and Micki Albreicht defeated San Pasqual’s Jennifer Gannon and Gina Pino, 6-0, 5-7, 7-5.

La Jolla, the three-time defending section champion, will play the Bishop’s School at 9:45 a.m. today in the 2-A championship at Poway High School. Bishop’s beat Coronado, 7-0, in the other 2-A semifinal Friday.

Lynn Coakley defeated Shamen Dugger, 6-2, 6-1, in the No. 1 singles to lead Bishop’s Friday. The only struggle for Bishop’s came in the No. 3 singles, when Anna Vortmann rallied in the first game en route to a 7-6, 6-3 victory over Coronado’s Carlin Henson.

This will be the ninth time La Jolla and Bishop’s have met for the section championship. La Jolla has won the eight previous matches, including the two most recent in 1985 and 1986. Bishop’s and La Jolla split their City Western League matches this season.

3-A SEMIFINALS

Krista Kuechler defeated Point Loma’s Amy Lightner, 6-1, 6-0, to lead Torrey Pines to a 5-2 victory over the Pointers in a section 3-A semifinal. Torrey Pines meets Palomar League rival Poway today at 12:45 in the section championship at Carlsbad High School.

Poway easily defeated Patrick Henry, 7-0, Friday. In the only close match of the day, Poway’s Daniele Decosmo defeated Pam Tenney, 7-6, 7-6, in the No. 2 singles.

Poway has been the section runner-up the past three years.
