Memorial Scholarships Benefit Three Northridge Ballplayers

Three Cal State Northridge baseball players have been chosen as recipients of scholarships generated by trust funds in the names of deceased Matador players.

John Bonilla, a junior outfielder, is the recipient of the Lyman Bostock memorial scholarship named for the All-Star outfielder who played at CSUN in 1971-72. Bostock played in the major leagues for the Minnesota Twins and California Angels. He was shot to death in 1978 in Indiana.

Bonilla, a transfer from the University of San Diego, graduated from Notre Dame High in 1985.

Geoff Curtis, a junior pitcher-designated hitter, is the recipient of the Paul Edmondson scholarship named in memory of the pitcher who was the first CSUN player to reach the major leagues. Edmondson played at CSUN from 1963-65 and was a member of the Chicago White Sox in 1967-68. He was killed in an off-season car accident in 1968.

Curtis, a transfer from Taft College, is a projected starter for the Matadors.

Lenn Gilmore, a senior outfielder, is the recipient of the Kent Testerman memorial scholarship named for the CSUN catcher who was killed in a car accident in the fall of 1984.

Gilmore, whose brother Randy was one of Testerman’s best friends, batted .341 with 48 runs batted in and 10 home runs last season.
