Horse Racing Roundup : Lord Rukus Closes Fast to Win Hollywood Turf Express by Nose
Lord Rukus, outrun early, closed with a rush to beat Bundle Of Iron by a nose in the $83,350 Hollywood Turf Express Saturday at Hollywood Park.
Lord Rukus, ridden by Laffit Pincay, covered the six furlongs in 1:08 1/5. As the fifth betting choice, Lord Rukus paid $22.60, $10.20 and $5.60.
Bundle Of Iron, ridden by Dave Patton, finished a half-length ahead of Faro and paid $7 and $4.60. Faro, ridden by Sandy Hawley, paid $3.20 to show.
Favored Aberuschka finished sixth.
Heavy favorite Hot And Smoggy took the lead immediately, then shook off his eight opponents entering the stretch for an eight-length victory in the $111,400 Bay Meadows Derby at Bay Meadows in San Mateo, Calif.
Finishing second behind the 3-year-old Florida-bred son of Singular was Wolsey, who wound up 2 1/2 lengths in front of late-closing Lucky Harold H.
Jacinto Vasquez, a two-time Kentucky Derby winner making his first appearance at Bay Meadows, was aboard Hot And Smoggy.
Hot And Smoggy finished the 1 1/8-mile race in 1:48 3/5 and paid $5.60 in his seventh victory in 20 starts. The chestnut colt is owned by Annabelle Stute, wife of trainer Mel Stute, and Robert Magee.
