NBA Roundup : Barkley Does a Number on Jazz With 43 Points

Charles Barkley scored 43 points and grabbed 14 rebounds as the Philadelphia 76ers beat Utah, 106-100, Monday night at Salt Lake City, handing the Jazz its first home defeat of the season.

Barkley keyed a 15-1 first-quarter spurt by the 76ers and, in the fourth period, scored on a drive and free throw with 3:14 left to give Philadelphia a 99-94 advantage.

The Jazz, who at 7-0 were the only National Basketball Assn. team yet to lose a home game, overcame a 53-41 halftime deficit to lead 76-72 late in the third quarter. But a Barkley dunk and free throw with 10:25 left in the game gave Philadelphia the lead for good at 82-79.

Barkley scored six of Philadelphia’s next eight points as the 76ers built an 88-83 advantage with 7:50 remaining.

Utah guard John Stockton tied a franchise record with nine third-quarter assists in sparking Utah’s comeback.

Thurl Bailey finished with 21 points, and Stockton had 20 points and 16 assists. Cliff Robinson had 24 points for Philadelphia.

Milwaukee 104, Indiana 94--Jack Sikma scored 21 points and Craig Hodges cut off an Indiana rally with 12 fourth-quarter points as the Bucks beat the Pacers at Milwaukee.

Hodges, who missed five games with a heel injury, returned to hit two three-pointers in the fourth quarter as the Bucks ended the Pacers’ three-game winning streak.

Milwaukee’s Randy Breuer scored 20 points, and Hodges and Terry Cummings had 16 apiece. Vern Fleming scored 20 points, Steve Stipanovich 19 and Chuck Person 18 for the Pacers.
