PREP BASKETBALL : Girls’ Roundup : Brea-Olinda Wins Irvine Tournament

Brea-Olinda High School showed why it is the county’s top-ranked girls’ basketball team with a 65-41 victory over La Quinta Saturday in the final of the eighth annual Irvine girls’ basketball tournament at Irvine High School.

Brea (4-0) won its fifth Irvine tournament title in seven years after being upset last year in the final by Edison. Sophomore guard Aimee McDaniel led Brea with 28 points. Center Susan Tousey, a second-team all-county selection last season, added 20 and was named the tournament’s most valuable player.

La Quinta (3-1), ranked seventh in the county, opened the game with a 16-12 first-quarter lead. Brea-Olinda outscored the Aztecs, 13-1, in the second quarter when starters Laura Anderson and Amy Jalewacia got into foul trouble with four each.

In other Irvine Tournament action:

Edison 63, Huntington Beach 36--Forward Krisden Tanabe scored 18 points and guard Stephanie Moorman scored 16 to lead the Chargers (3-1) for third place.

Woodbridge 77, Moreno Valley 43--Kathy Millat scored 25 points and Randee Mahony added 17 to lead the Warriors (3-1) in the fifth-place game.

Loara 48, Ganesha 47--Kim Yoshioka had 13 points and Noelle Plack added 10 to lead Loara (3-1) in the seventh-place game. Ganesha is 2-2.

In the Garden Grove Tournament:

Capistrano Valley 75, La Serna 28--Shelley Zierhut had 21 points and Heather Schoney 19 to lead the Cougars (1-1) in the consolation bracket. Schoney also had 11 rebounds and Zierhut 9.

In the Artesia Tournament:

Westminster 80, Pacific 22--Shannon Bates had 23 points and 7 rebounds to lead the Lions (1-2).

In nonleague games:

Orange Lutheran 38, La Verne Lutheran 19--Pam Marty had 10 points to lead Orange Lutheran to a nonleague victory at home.

Marina 65, Foothill 31--Charroin Dawn scored 24 points and Deedee Stieger added 18 to lead the Vikings at Foothill. Liberty Brewster added 12 points and Allison Krause had 14 assists for Marina (2-0). Heli Syrjanen scored eight points to lead the Knights (1-1).
