Golf Roundup : Woosnam Takes Lead in South African Event

Ian Woosnam of Wales took a one-stroke lead in the third round of the winner-take-all Million Dollar Challenge Saturday at Sun City, South Africa.

Fulton Allem of South Africa, who led the eight-man field by three strokes after the second round, stumbled to a 74 and was overtaken by Woosnam, Briton Nick Faldo and South African David Frost.

All three shot four-under-par 68s, leaving Woosnam at 206, Faldo at 207 and Frost at 208. Allem was fourth at 209.

Bernhard Langer of West Germany, tied for second place with Woosnam after the second round, started with a quadruple-bogey 8 on the first hole but finished with a 73 and a total of 211.

Also at 211 was Spaniard Jose-Maria Olazabal, who shot a 70.

Trailing the field were Curtis Strange and Lanny Wadkins. Each shot a 72, leaving Strange at 213 and Wadkins at 215.

Allem started strongly with two birdies, which put him five shots ahead of the field, then bogeyed three straight holes.

Allem lost the lead for the first time in the tournament on the par-5 ninth hole when he hit two balls into the water guarding the island green and took a triple-bogey.

Frost won a playoff with Woosnam and Faldo to take the $50,000 bonus for the lowest round of the day. Aside from those bonuses, the only payoff will be the $1-million winner’s check today.

Bob Charles shot a three-under-par 69 to hold off a late charge by Dale Douglass and win by two strokes in the Mauna Lani Seniors Challenge at Mauna Lani, Hawaii.

Charles, who started the day in second place, played consistent golf in the final round on the island of Hawaii to finish with a 54-hole total of 207.

Douglass started the final day in a tie for fifth place. He picked up a stroke at the sixth, eagled the 10th and followed with birdies at the 11th, 14th and 16th to move within a shot of Charles before bogeying the 18th to finish with a 67 and a 209 total.

Ben Smith also shot a 67 and finished at 212 with the PGA Seniors Tour’s leading money-winner, Chi Chi Rodriguez, who had a 70.

Mark McCumber and Debbie Massey shot a seven-under-par 65 and took a one-stroke lead in the third round of the $650,000 Mixed Team tournament at Largo, Fla.

McCumber and Massey posted seven birdies and no bogeys on the Bardmoor Country Club course en route to a 54-hole total of 199, one shot better than Steve Jones and Jane Crafter, who had a 66.

Wayne Levi and Dale Eggeling shot their second straight 66 and were third at 202.
