SHOPPING AT THE WINTER MEETINGS

What the 26 major league clubs will be seeking at the baseball meetings in Dallas:

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Atlanta: Finished last in league in team ERA so some arms wouldn’t hurt. Lefty Zane Smith has attracted some interest.

Chicago Cubs: Need a left-handed starter, a left-hander reliever and an outfielder. Bait is Jody Davis, Keith Moreland and Leon Durham.

Cincinnati: Has already made a major move by landing left-hander Danny Jackson. Best gift would be less interference from owner Marge Schott.

Houston: Manager Hal Lanier has stressed the need for a backup catcher and a right-handed hitting shortstop. May sign righty Joaquin Andujar.

Los Angeles Dodgers: Still seeking reliever, since deals for Ed Vande Berg and Matt Young flopped. Will need infielders, too, especially if Steve Sax moves to outfield.

Montreal: Acquisition of solid shortstop would free Hubie Brooks to play right. Expos may be one of the few teams that can offer pitching.

New York Mets: Would love to find a taker for left-handed reliever Jesse Orosco. Might also shop Mookie Wilson for a new look in center field.

Philadelphia: Seeking a shortstop, a right-handed starter and some bench help. May be one of the more active teams, with OF Glenn Wilson as bait.

Pittsburgh: Needs a left-handed starter to make them stronger within the division. GM Syd Thrift may also seek a right-handed power hitter.

St. Louis: Likes its lineup very much. Confident of re-signing slugger Jack Clark. May try to pick up some pitching.

San Diego: GM Jack McKeon has listed OF Tony Gwynn and C Benito Santiago as his only untouchables. But don’t expect a blockbuster.

San Francisco: Lost free agent Chili Davis but filled need for a leadoff hitter by signing Brett Butler. Won’t be looking for any major deals, but may have some pitching to offer.

AMERICAN LEAGUE

Baltimore: Stories keep cropping up 1B Eddie Murray is headed for a league change. Pitching help from top to bottom a must. With Billy Ripken and Pete Stanicek both available to play 2B, might not one be available to deal?

Boston: Wishes it could unload Bob Stanley and his high salary. May dangle C Rich Gedman, who held out and slipped badly. Could use insurance for Dennis Boyd.

California Angels: Signed free agent Chili Davis and hopeful of re-signing free-agent pitcher Mike Witt. Needs more new blood to replace aging stars. Time is running out on Bob Boone with little help in sight. CF Gary Pettis on block.

Chicago White Sox: Already picked up Dan Pasqua from NY Yankees. LHP Floyd Bannister reportedly available and Yankees may try to reunite him with Richard Dotson. Could use 3b. Mike Pagliarulo?

Cleveland: Needs CF since Brett Butler signed with San Francisco. Is this the year Carmen Castillo gets traded? Did good job of rebuilding pitching staff second half of season but still need more. 3B Brook Jacoby may go for a pitcher, making way for rookie Ken Williams.

Detroit: LHP Willie Hernandez a goner, with Tigers probably picking up most of his salary. Wish Hernandez deal could turn into badly needed RH hitter, decent outfielder. Must re-sign Jack Morris, Frank Tanana, Dan Petry. Could then trade a starter for mentioned help.

Kansas City: Got badly needed SS from Reds, Kurt Stillwell, but many feel he won’t cut it on KC rug. Need to start looking for outfield help (Is Bo Jackson coming back? Does it matter?) and replacment for Frank White. RHP Dan Quisenberry wants out, but who can afford him? Free-agent 1B Steve Balboni also not satisfied. Will Royals wave Balboni bye bye?

Milwaukee: Poised for flag run, needs only more depth in pitching staff. Could dangle farm product, of which many.

Minnesota: Winter comments indicated Twins front office wasn’t fooled by World Series win. Need to and probably will re-sign free-agents 3B Gary Gaetti and RP Juan Berenguer. Could also use catching help.

New York Yankees: Need shortstop, pitching, catching help. Outfield getting some age in spots. Many bats to shop for arms.

Oakland: Reportedly making strong pitch for OF-DH Dave Parker from Reds. Would fit nicely between Jose Canseco and Mark McGwire in lineup. Stable, halthy starting pitching help a must, too.

Seattle: Another of the 26 teams that could use pitching. OF Phil Bradley gone. Might trade 2b Harold Presley if right offer comes along.

Texas: Looks like a stand-pat team. Could use catcher. Utility player Gino Petralli has value.

Toronto: Could use 3B, 2B, strong starting pitcher. May have to deal one of many outfield prospects. RHP Dave Stieb may be available. He has attractive buyout clause. 1B Willie Upshaw would be trade bait except for his big contract.
