Services Scheduled Wednesday for Football Star Bob Garrett

Services will be held Wednesday at 4 p.m. at San Marino Community Church, 1750 Virginia Road in San Marino, for Bob Garrett, former Stanford All-American quarterback who died at Saturday of a heart attack.

Garrett, who ranks with such other Stanford quarterbacks as Frankie Albert, Jim Plunkett, John Elway and John Brodie, grew up in San Marino and attended South Pasadena High School before going on to Stanford.

In 1953, his senior year, Garrett was named to the All-American team by the Football Writers of America, the All-American Board of Coaches and the Newspaper Editors Alliance.

During that year, Garrett completed 118 of 205 passes for 1,537 yards and 17 touchdowns and led the nation in passing, touchdown responsibility and point-after-touchdown efficiency. He was named winner of the Voit Trophy as the West Coast’s outstanding player. He was a bonus first-round draft pick of the Cleveland Browns in 1954 and played a season with the Green Bay Packers.

Garrett had his greatest day when he led Stanford from a 20-7 deficit to a 21-20 upset of UCLA in 1953. He completed 18 of 27 passes for 196 yards and 3 touchdowns.

UCLA Coach Red Sanders was quoted at the time as saying: “I’ve never seen any one man control a ball game like Garrett did out there today. I mean anytime, anywhere.”

Garrett leaves his wife, a son, a daughter, and a brother.
