The longest winning streak in Orange County came to an end Thursday night with little fanfare and even less opposition.

Woodbridge High School, the defending state Division II champion, was reduced to just another team in a stunning 65-48 loss to host Fountain Valley in the semifinals of the seventh Fountain Valley Tournament.

The Warriors had won 19 consecutive games over the past two seasons but were no match for the hot-shooting Barons. Fountain Valley made 28 of 53 field goal attempts and did a good job of containing Adam Keefe, the Warriors’ 6-foot 9-inch All-American center.

Keefe scored 26 points and had 11 rebounds, but he scored 10 of his points in the last quarter after Fountain Valley (3-0) had control of the game.

“We executed a game plan that we put together only five minutes before the game,” said Dave Brown, Fountain Valley coach. “We wanted to draw people on Adam and try to deny him the ball.

“This time of the year, I don’t prepare for preseason opponents and we didn’t have a walk-through. I only wish we could put this performance in a bottle and keep it.”

Tom Weaver, the Barons’ point guard, was the catalyst of the upset, scoring 19 points and effectively running the offense. Teammate Jim Borgquist added 17 points, including a three-point shot with 5:19 remaining in the third quarter that gave the Barons a 34-24 lead.

Woodbridge (1-1) was playing without four team members who will participate in tonight’s Desert-Mountain Conference football title game.

Edison 68, L.B. Millikan 57--The Chargers shot 58% from the field to advance to the championship game at 7:30 tonight against rival Fountain Valley. Guard Alvin Loftis made 11 of 18 shots to finish with a game-high 24 points.
