NBA Roundup : Frustrated Blazers Beaten Again, 125-112

When the Portland Trail Blazers embarked on their first eastern swing this season, they had won nine in a row and were atop the Pacific Division.

After three games against tough Eastern Conference rivals, the Trail Blazers are getting a definite feeling of frustration.

Jack Sikma scored 35 points and Terry Cummings had 28 Friday night at Milwaukee to lead the Bucks to a 125-112 victory over Portland. It was the third consecutive loss for the Blazers and their tempers flared during the rough battle.

In the third quarter, Clyde Drexler, who had scored 21 points, charged and bumped referee Bernie Fryer after being called for a foul and was ejected.

Four technicals, two on Maurice Lucas, were called against Portland in the foul-plagued game.

The Bucks, despite losing Cummings, Randy Breuer and Paul Mokeski on fouls, steadily pulled away in the fourth quarter in a game that had been tightly-contested. Sikma had eight of his points in the fourth quarter, but it was Paul Pressey with 11, who put the game away.

The Bucks, who are 11-7, welcomed back Sidney Moncrief. In his season debut the veteran guard played 16 minutes and had four points.

The Trail Blazers were again without shooter Kiki Vandeweghe, who has a back injury.

Detroit 114, Washington 108--It took about half of last season for his new teammates to get accustomed to playing with the talented Adrian Dantley. In his second season with the Pistons, they are playing as though Dantley had been around for years.

Dantley and Joe Dumars combined their talents to lead the Pistons to their fifth consecutive victory in this game at Pontiac, Mich.

The Pistons built a 15-point lead in the third quarter, but John Williams and Terry Catledge led a Bullet rally that cut the lead to 98-97 with 6:36 to play.

It was still a one-point lead with 4:23 to play. Dumars then scored eight points down the stretch and Dantley, who finished with 29 points, had four to turn back the Bullets.

Just before the game the Pistons announced that troubled center Darryl Dawkins had been placed on the suspended list. They said it was for personal and physical conditioning problems.

Dallas 108, Phoenix 104--The Mavericks, given a reprieve at Dallas when Jeff Hornacek missed a layup with one second left in regulation, took charge in overtime to win their fourth in a row.

If Hornacek makes the layup, the Suns win their second road game of the season. Instead, with the score still tied, 99-99, Sam Perkins opened the overtime with two baskets and closed it with a pair of free throws to clinch the victory with two seconds left.

It was the first meeting of the teams since former Suns’ Coach John MacLeod became coach of the Mavericks.

Cleveland 115, Sacramento 113--Mark Price scored 15 of his 18 points in the fourth quarter at Sacramento to help the Cavaliers wipe out a 17-point deficit.

A three-point play by Brad Daugherty with 31 seconds left gave the Cavaliers a 114-113 lead and Price made the second of two free throws with five seconds left and the Kings lost their seventh in a row.

Atlanta 109, Golden State 93--Dominique Wilkins, who is recovering from an injured toe, broke out of a shooting slump with 45 points to lead the Hawks to victory at Oakland. Wilkins, who was only 9 for 30 in the previous two games, hit 18 of 25 shots as the Hawks gained their sixth victory in the last seven games.

The Warriors were without starting guard Chris Mullin, who drew a one-game suspension after missing practice Thursday for the second time.
