Agoura Pair Win Top Awards for Ventura Runners

Bryan Dameworth and Deena Drossin of Agoura High have been named Ventura County male and female runners of the year by the Ventura County High Schools Cross-Country Coaches Assn.

Dameworth, a sophomore, won the state Division I and Ventura County titles and placed fourth in the Southern Section 2-A Division championships this season.

Drossin, a freshman, won the state Division I, Ventura County and Southern Section 2-A titles. She also placed second in the Kinney West regionals in Fresno last Saturday.

Mike Smith of Camarillo and Bill Duley of Agoura were honored as the boys and girls coaches of the year.

Smith, 35, guided the Scorpions to their first Ventura County and Marmonte League team titles this season. Camarillo also placed third in the Southern Section 4-A championships and fourth in the state Division I championships.

Duley, 30, led Agoura to the Ventura County and Southern Section 2-A titles and a second-place finish in the state Division I championships.

Other Valley-area runners named to the All-Ventura County first team were Mike Esparza of Newbury Park, Paul McCarter and Tim Farrell of Thousand Oaks, Abe Valdez of Camarillo and Peter Oviatt of Agoura.

Jena Haggenmiller and Pam Fuller of Thousand Oaks, Jessica Craven of Camarillo, Tiffany York of Agoura and Amy Nesbitt of Newbury Park were named to the girls first team.
