Brea-Olinda High School ended a three-game winless streak Monday with a 3-1 victory over Diamond Bar, the defending Southern Section 3-A champion, at Brea.

The Brahmas took a 1-0 lead at the 17-minute mark of the first half, when Jeff Turley scored from 15 yards with a shot that hit the right goal post and ricocheted into the net.

“That was the only place he could put the ball,” Brea Coach Manny Toledo said. “Our goalie (Danny LaFrance) played it well, but there is no way to defense that shot.”

Brea (3-2-3), which was 0-2-1 in its last two matches, managed to pull even with one minute left in the first half, when Matt Swindle scored on a penalty kick.

Scott Maurer gave the Wildcats a 2-1 lead at the three-minute mark of the second half. Maurer beat goalie Mark Faurot to the right with a header off a corner kick by J.R. Oakes.

Oakes then clinched the victory, when he took a pass from Maurer and beat Faurot to the left with a shot from 15 yards.

“Swindle’s goal was the big one,” Toledo said. “The momentum carried into the second half. We came out fired up and were able to score quickly.”

LaFrance made 14 saves for Brea.

“He saved the game in the first half,” Toledo said. “He stopped one shot by going backward and diving to stop the ball from going over the line.”

Faurot made 10 saves for the Brahmas (2-2-1).
