THE PREPS : Boys’ Basketball Roundup : Santa Ana Defeats Norco, 86-52

Bobby Joyce scored 27 points to lead Santa Ana High School to a 86-52 victory over Norco Monday in the first round of the Irvine World News Tournament at Woodbridge High School.

The Saints (6-0), who are ranked second in Orange County, led 21-11 at the end of the first quarter. They extended that advantage to 44-24 at halftime.

Willie Lane scored 14 points and Oscar Wilson 12 for Santa Ana.

Norco is 0-4.

In other Irvine tournament games:

At Woodbridge High School:

Mission Viejo 68, Savanna 60--Tom Trakh scored 26 points to lead the Diablos (3-3). Eric Shinkle had 15 points and Richard Kemple 13 for the Rebels (4-2).

Woodbridge 76, Pacifica 56--The Warriors (2-2) were led by Adam Keefe, who scored 35 points. Teammate Garth Anderson had 16 points. Jeff Banks scored 19 for the Mariners.

Artesia 50, Dana Hills 44--Guard Ezell Adams scored all four of his points in the final 38 seconds as the Pioneers improved to 4-3. Dana Hills (2-3) was led by junior center John Lloyd with 21 points and 9 rebounds.

At University High School:

Laguna Hills 64, Garey 62--Kyle Roberts made a 5-foot jump shot at the buzzer to give the Hawks the victory. Mike Smeedes led Laguna Hills with 20 points and teammate Chris Sheff added 17. Ken Hall scored 30 points and Marcus Austin 21 for Garey.

Corona del Mar 77, Los Amigos 61--Matt Cwiertnia scored 26 points to lead the Sea Kings. Teammate Matt Herrington added 12 points. Corona del Mar (5-1) led 22-20 after one quarter, but outscored the Lobos, 38-24, over the next two quarters to take a 16-point lead. Corona del Mar’s Jeff Probst had 10 assists. John Jenkins had 18 points and Carlos Palomino 14 for Los Amigos (0-3).

Capistrano Valley 66, Esperanza 58--The Cougars (4-10) built a 21-8 lead in the first quarter and held off the Aztecs (4-2). Capistrano Valley had four players in double figures. Jim Waikle had 18 points, Chuck Lockhard, 15, Scott McCorkle, 11 and Randy Stark with 10. Esperanza was led by Mark Morris with 18 points.

At Irvine High School:

Estancia 60, Western 49--Mike Curtis scored 20 points to lead the Eagles (6-1). Estancia trailed, 26-22, at halftime, but outscored the Pioneers, 19-10, in the third quarter to take the lead. Brian Bradley scored 15 points and Chris Rupsa 11 for the Eagles. Joey Romero scored 12 points and Chris Bowen 11 for Western.

Saddleback 92, Corona 38--Malru Dottin scored 27 points and Gylan Dottin 21 to lead the the Roadrunners. Saddleback out-scored the Panthers, 29-5, in the second quarter to turn the game into a rout.

Cypress 70, L.B. Wilson 61--Greg Bedford led the Centurions (1-5) with 25 points. Cypress led, 54-30, entering the final quarter, but the Bruins scored 31 points in the fourth quarter. Bond Webber scored 17 points for Cypress.

Costa Mesa 64, Irvine 55--Paul Kos scored 34 points to lead the Mustangs (2-3). He made four three-point shots, including one from midcourt at the end of the third court. Teammate Greg Ertel added 18 points. Raphael Molle scored 15 points for the Vaqueros (2-4)

In the Tournament of Champions:

Westchester 77, Ocean View 69--The Seahawks (3-3) scored 32 in the fourth quarter, but ran out of time. Craig Rice scored 27 points and Mike Frohn 20 for Ocean View (3-3). John Mason led Westchester with 31 points.

In the Glendora Tournament:

Brea-Olinda 65, Bonita 63--Keith Walker scored 26 points to lead the Wildcats (3-2), who had to hold off a fourth-quarter rally by the Bearcats. Eric Smith scored 29 points for Bonita, which outscored Brea-Olinda, 21-10, in the final quarter.

In nonleague:

Loara 56, Anaheim 48--The Saxons (1-3) were led by Mark Plettinck, who scored 18 points, and Montes Whitlock, who scored 15. Marcus Mitchell had 20 points and Matt Buis 19 for the Colonists (1-3).

Capistrano Valley Christian 66, St. Margaret’s 61--Brett Biegert scored 17 points and Chris Phillips 16 to lead the host Eagles (2-3).
