Local News in Brief : Land Dispute Settled
- Share via
A controversy in Alhambra over a site for a new car dealership has ended with a court decision enabling the Alhambra Redevelopment Agency to buy a savings and loan site for $5.3 million and avoid uprooting a home for the blind, a church, a pet hospital and nine businesses.
The agency will acquire about three acres from Progressive Savings & Loan and other owners of land on the north side of Main Street at Palm Avenue and resell it at a discount to the Barry Frey car dealership. Court approval was required because three members of the City Council, which acts as the Redevelopment Agency, own stock in the savings and loan.
Efforts to acquire the site ran into legal difficulties earlier this year because of an ownership dispute involving the savings and loan property. The Redevelopment Agency then proposed putting the car dealership on land now used by the home for the blind, pet hospital, and other businesses, prompting strong protests.
