College Basketball Roundup : Memphis St. Winner in Overtime

Memphis State’s John McLaughlin hit a three-point shot with three seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime, and the 19th-ranked Tigers went on to defeat Bradley, 113-108, Thursday night at Memphis, Tenn.

McLaughlin’s desperation shot was Memphis State’s third three-pointer in 30 seconds and tied the score, 103-103. The Braves (3-1) had a 99-94 lead in the final minute.

Bradley’s Hersey Hawkins, who scored 38 points, missed the front end of a one-and-one before McLaughlin’s tying field goal. Hawkins made 15 of 17 free throws.

Cheyenne Gibson scored 28 points for Memphis (5-1), and Dewayne Bailey had 22 points and 9 rebounds. Dwight Boyd added 19 points.

Trevor Trimpe scored 20 points, including 6 of 10 three-pointers, for Bradley, and Anthony Manuel added 18 points.

North Carolina 98, The Citadel 74--J.R. Reid scored 21 points on 10-of-15 shooting, and the fourth-ranked Tar Heels coasted past the Bulldogs at Charlotte, N.C.

Reid scored 12 points in the first half, sparking a 9-3 rally that brought the Tar Heels (6-1) back from an 18-11 deficit. North Carolina took the lead for good at 25-23 on Ranzino Smith’s three-point shot with 8:14 left in the half.

Pete Chilcutt and Steve Bucknall added 16 points each for North Carolina, while Kent Hill scored 21 points for The Citadel (2-4).

Syracuse 111, St. Bonaventure 68--Sophomore reserve forward Keith Hughes scored 19 points, and the ninth-ranked Orangemen (7-2) overpowered the Bonnies (2-2) at Syracuse, N.Y.

Earl Duncan added 14 points and Matt Roe had 12 for Syracuse, which raced to a 14-1 lead and was never challenged.

Eastern Michigan 84, Michigan State 80--Howard Chambers and Lorenzo Neely each made two free throws in the final 18 seconds of overtime, and the Hurons knocked off the Spartans at Ypsilanti, Mich.

The Hurons (5-2) led by 10 points with 1:28 left in regulation, but Steve Smith and Scott Sekal each hit two three-pointers to pull the Spartans (4-2) even.

Grant Long had 21 points and 10 rebounds for the Hurons, and Ken Redfield had 20 for Michigan State.
