Boys’ Roundup : It’s in the Bank as Deibert Hits Game-Winner for Woodbridge

Chris Deibert, a Woodbridge High School forward, made a desperation bank shot as he was falling to the floor with three seconds remaining to give the Warriors a 47-46 victory over Saddleback Thursday night in the quarterfinals of the sixth Irvine World News Tournament at Woodbridge.

Deibert rebounded a shot by teammate Adam Keefe and somehow managed to release a shot before he hit the floor. The Warriors then had to survive a last-second shot by Saddleback’s Sean Simon, which hit the rim.

“I was afraid the players might be celebrating a little early,” said Bill Shannon, Woodbridge’s coach. “We’ve been doing a lot of celebrating around here lately. I don’t know how many offensive rebounds we had tonight, but Chris’ was a big one.”

Deibert had only two points before his final shot as the Warriors relied primarily on the inside play of Keefe and outside shooting of Rob Lee. Keefe finished with 21 points, 14 rebounds and 4 blocked shots. Lee added 12 points, including a pair of three-point shots.

Keefe appeared to have wrapped up a victory for the Warriors (4-2) with 1:46 remaining when he made two free throws to make it 45-42. But Craig Marshall and Tony Agnew both stole passes and scored on layups to pushed Saddleback (6-2) ahead, 46-45, with 32 seconds remaining.

Marshall led the Roadrunners with 14 points, scoring 10 in the second half. Gylan Dottin scored 11 points and had 9 rebounds and his younger brother, Malru, added 8 points and 8 rebounds. But the Dottin brothers had just one point between them in the second half.

In other Irvine tournament games:

Edison 74, Capistrano Valley 72 (OT)--Forward Mike Hunter tipped in an errant shot with three seconds remaining in overtime at Woodbridge as the Chargers advanced to a semifinal game against Santa Ana tonight at 7:30 at University High.

Charger guard Dirk Paul sent the game into overtime when he scored on a layup with 25 seconds remaining to make it 65-65. Todd Marinovich led all scorers with 29 points, including five three-point shots.

Artesia 51, Cypress 48--Center Ed O’Bannon had 18 points to lead Artesia. Cypress (1-7) was led by Greg Bedford (15 points) and Bond Weaver (11).

Kennedy 58, Estancia 47--Mike Keith scored 24 points and Glenn Tarlton added 10 for Kennedy in the quarterfinal victory. Kennedy plays Woodbridge at 7:30 at Woodbridge in a semifinal game. Mike Curtis led Estancia with 19 points.

Laguna Hills 58, Corona del Mar 55--Laguna Hills trailed by 22 at the half (45-23), but outscored Corona del Mar, 35-10, in the second half to win. Laguna Hills was led by Trent DeVreugd, an exchange student who played on the West German junior national team. Matt Herrington led Corona del Mar with 16.

Long Beach Wilson 51, Dana Hills 47--The Bruins were led by Lantz Simpson’s 13 points. Long Beach Wilson plays Irvine in a consolation semifinal game today at Woodbridge at 4:30. Dana Hills was led by 6-8 center John Lloyd, who had 18 points.

Los Amigos 64, Garey 63--John Jenkins scored 25 points for Los Amigos to the consolation victory. Garey’s Marcus Austin led all scorers with 31 points.

Marina 78, Costa Mesa 57--Steve Guild scored 26 points, David Yamate 19 and Cherokee Parks 13 for Marina. Yamate made five three-point shots. Marina plays Arestia in a seventh-place semifinal game at Irvine at 7:30 p.m. Paul Kos had 34 for Costa Mesa.

Santa Ana 80, Paramount 79--Center Bobby Joyce scored 36 points and had 24 rebounds to lead the Saints (8-0) in a quarterfinal of the championship bracket. Santa Ana guard Leo Leon had 11 points and 10 assists. Santa Ana plays Edison tonight at 7:30 at University High in the semifinals. Paramount guard Kris Korver had 33 points, including nine three-point shots.

University 66, Mission Viejo 48--Steve Stolzoff, a 6-4 forward, scored 30 points, including four three-point shots to lead the Trojans at Irvine High. David Warren added 10 points for University (5-3), which will play Laguna Hills in a seventh-place semifinal game at 6 p.m. at Irvine High.

In the Arroyo Grande Tournament:

Fountain Valley 81, St. Joseph’s 53--Kevin Anderson scored 14 points, Lewie Murdence 12 and Tom Weaver 10 for Fountain Valley in the first round. Fountain Valley led, 40-17, at the half and 63-30 at the end of three quarters. Fountain Valley (5-0) plays San Luis Obiso at 6:30 tonight in one semifinal.

In the El Dorado Tournament:

Canyon 57, Valencia 54--Ralph Pacheceo scored 19 points and Brian Bailey added 16 for the Comanches to the consolation semifinal. Canyon (3-3) will play the winner of today’s Troy-Palm Desert game Saturday in the consolation final. Valencia was led by Mike Munoz, who scored 14 points, and Bernie James, who had 13.

Downey 67, Whittier Christian 60--Guillermo Cabrera scored 16 points and Ferdy Wojcieschowski added 13 to lead Downey. Whittier Christian was led by 6-5 center Erik Martin, who had a game-high 20 points. Brett Molter added 18 points for Whittier Christian.

In the Fullerton Tournament:

Sonora 58, Villa Park 54--Gayle Humphrey scored 22 points, including four three-pointers in the first quarter, for Sonora in the consolation semifinal game.

Matt Recktenwald had 11 points and 8 rebounds, and Scott St. Clair had 11 points and 10 rebounds. Geoff Crow added 12 for Sonora. Center Steve Waldrip had 17 points and 7 rebounds for Villa Park.

Buena Park 92, Sevite 72--Kevin Graddy scored 33 points and Gary Hunter 24 as Buena Park overcame an 11-point halftime deficit to win in one semifinal. Servite led, 43-32, at the half but was outscored, 60-29, in the second half.

Fullerton 78, Cerritos 54--Forward Pete Bach scored 12 points and guard Greg Wilber 15 to lead Fullerton (5-2) in a semifinal. Fullerton plays Buena Park for the championship tonight at 7:30.

In the St. John Bosco Tech Tournament:

Santa Ana Valley 94, Oxnard 77--Jason Vaughan, a 6-3 center, scored a game-high 25 points to lead the Falcons (4-3) to the first-round victory. Court Bickmore scored 18 points for Santa Ana Valley and Roshawn Lacy added 16. Oxnard was led by Walter Bell who had 17 points.

In the Tournament of Champions:

El Toro 76, Serra 58--Eric Speaker scored 24 points and Cory Wayland added 20 points and 16 rebounds for El Toro (5-1) in a quarterfinal game. Khari Johnson added 18 points and 9 rebounds and Bret Johnson had 10 points and 11 assists for El Toro.

In a nonleague game:

Capistrano Valley Christian 63, Calvin 32--Brian Jacobson scored 15 points and Shane Meiner and Chris Phillips scored 13 each for Capistrano Valley Christian (3-3) at home. Toby Lenz added 10 for Capistrano Valley Christian.
