SportsScope : Harrick, Westhead, Raveling to Head Clinic in Torrance

Pepperdine Coach Jim Harrick, Loyola Marymount Coach Paul Westhead and USC Coach George Raveling will headline the third annual Torrance Basketball Clinic from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at West High School, 20401 Victor St. Admission is free. The clinic deals with all levels for players and coaches.

The Loyola Marymount women’s basketball team, having equaled its victory total of last season at five, is in the midst of an eight-game home stand that will bring Weber State (2-4) to Gersten Pavilion tonight and Hawaii on Saturday. Both begin at 5 p.m. Freshmen guards Kristen Bruich and Lynn Flanagan pace the 5-2 Lions with scoring averages of 11.3 and 11.1. Freshman center Tricia Gibson leads in rebounding with a 6.4 average.

Coach Todd Corman, whose team is off to the best start in its history, said, “Right now we’re not really playing as well as I think we’re capable of, but it’s nice to be getting in that victory column more often than in the past.”

The Cal State Dominguez Hills women’s basketball team will play host to Cal State Hayward at 7:30 tonight and UC Santa Barbara at 7:30 Monday in non-conference games. The Lady Toros (2-5) are playing a monthlong home stand after playing six of their games on the road. Hayward is 3-4. Santa Barbara, the only Division I opponent the Lady Toros will face, began the week 3-1.

The Lady Toros are led by senior forward Michelle Jennings with averages of 9.4 points and 7.6 rebounds and senior guard Angel Wells at 10.1 points. Two oncoming players are point guard Maria Elzy, averaging 11 points and 4 assists in her last four games, and center Kathy Goggin, averaging 10 points and 7.6 rebounds over the last three games.

Team registration is under way for the adult slo-pitch softball, men’s and women’s basketball and adult volleyball programs sponsored by the Redondo Beach Recreation and Parks Department. Softball teams sign up through Jan. 8 for men’s and women’s open divisions. Games will be played Monday through Thursday evenings.

Registration for basketball and volleyball begins on Jan. 4 for individuals and Jan. 11 for teams and will run through Jan. 22. Basketball and volleyball leagues will play at Aviation gym. Information is available at the recreation department, 1102 Camino Real, 376-0884.
