Community College Basketball Roundup : Fullerton Bows in Triple Overtime

Tolbert Routt made an 18-foot jump shot as time ran out in the third overtime to give Los Angeles Harbor College an 81-80 victory over Fullerton in the semifinals of the Cypress men’s basketball tournament Friday at Cypress.

Fullerton (8-4) had two chances to put the game away in the third overtime but couldn’t. Kellie McKinney and Roy Joseph each missed the front ends of one-and-one free throw opportunities in the final 10 seconds. Joseph missed a free throw with eight seconds and L.A. Harbor got the rebound and called time out to set up the winning shot.

L.A. Harbor plays Santa Monica in the final at 7 p.m. and Fullerton plays defending tournament champion Rancho Santiago at 5 p.m. This will be the third time Fullerton and Rancho Santiago have played this season. The teams split the first two meetings.

Mark Hill led L.A. Harbor (10-3) with 29 points and Troy Joseph led Fullerton with 23 points. Darren Queen added 19 for Fullerton.

In other Cypress Tournament play:

Santa Monica 84, Rancho Santiago 79--Rancho Santiago guard Kenny Ammann set a tournament record with 37 points but it wasn’t enough. Troy Batiste scored 17 points to lead Santa Monica into the final.

Ammann, a sophomore transfer from Cal State Bakersfield, was 12 of 20 from the field and and 10 of 10 from the free-throw line. He was 3 of 5 on three-point shots. Santa Monica is 12-3 and Rancho Santiago 11-3.

Cypress 86, Westmont JV 67--Jeff Green and Jim Sammon scored 15 points each for Cypress which won the consolation semifinal. Cypress will play Washington Clark in the consolation championship today at 3 p.m.

Kris Brodowski added 12 points for Cypress (11-3), which has lost two of its last three games.

Cypress was dropped into the losers’ bracket after losing to Fullerton, 64-61, in the first round.

In the Riverside tournament:

Saddleback 61, San Deigo Mesa 53--Joe Hudson scored 15 points and Vincent Smalls 14 to lead Saddleback in the consolation semifinal game. Saddleback, which won the tournament last year, plays San Bernardino Valley in the consolation championship today at 1 p.m.

Renny Ingram, making his second start after an ankle injury which kept him on the bench for a week, scored 11 points for Saddleback (8-6).

Saddleback opened a 43-24 lead with 17 minutes left in the game, but Mesa made it close thanks to Ted Wassenburger. The guard made five three-point shots in the final 10 minutes and finished with a game high 21 points for San Diego Mesa (3-10).

In the Glendale Tournament:

Orange Coast 90, East Los Angeles 69--Dave Miles scored a game-high 19 points and had 10 rebounds as OCC won in the consolation semifinal.

Dareck Crane added 18 points and 7 rebounds for OCC (9-6). Reid Lukes had 14 and Ted Stitt 12 also for OCC which defeated East Los Angeles (0-11) for the second time this season.

In the College of Sequoias Tournament:

Golden West 100, West Hills 61--Markus Muller-Stach scored a game-high 23 points to lead Golden West, which had five players score in double figures, in the consolation semifinal game.

Golden West plays Porterville at 1 p.m. today for the consolation championship.

Elbert Davis scored 19 points, Anthony Howard and Doug Rice scored 13 each and Jim Stewart had 10 also for Golden West (7-5), which led, 45-27, at the half. West Hills is 11-4.

In women’s nonconference games:

Saddleback 48, San Diego Mesa 42--Julia Monaghan scored a career-high 26 points and teammate Ana Harmon added 18 points as the Gauchos improved to 5-5 at San Diego.

Cypress 75, El Camino 46--Karen Caires scored 16 points, Vicky Silva 14, Lola Herrera 12 and Becky Wayland and Venetta Dorlis 10 each for Cypress in the victory at home.
