Women’s Basketball Roundup : Texas Defeats CS Long Beach, 99-85; USC Edges Ohio St., 85-81

All-American Clarissa Davis scored 26 points and pulled down 13 rebounds as No. 1-ranked Texas defeated Cal State Long Beach, 99-85, Friday night at Austin, Tex.

It was the sixth time the unbeaten Lady Longhorns had scored more than 90 points this season.

Penny Toler of Long Beach (3-3) led all scorers with 30 points.

Texas (7-0) jumped out to an 18-point lead as Davis paced the way with 14 points and led, 49-34, at halftime.

Long Beach, ranked No. 9, scored the first seven points of the second half to cut Texas’ lead to 49-41. But the Longhorns built the lead back to 17 points, and the 49ers could get no closer than 9.

Beverly Williams scored 22 points for Texas, and senior Doretha Conwell, playing for the first time in almost a year after a knee injury, scored 10 points.

USC 85, Ohio State 81--Cherie Nelson scored 32 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as the Lady Trojans defeated the eighth-ranked Buckeyes at USC.

USC led, 42-34, at halftime, but the Buckeyes rallied to go ahead, 64-62, with 8:26 to play. Nelson scored two straight baskets to put the Trojans in the lead for good. Paula Pyers hit three free throws in the final 41 seconds to keep the visitors at bay.

Karen Howell scored 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for USC (3-3). Lisa Cline scored 28 for Ohio State (5-1).
