THE COLLEGES : Community College : Basketball Roundup : Rancho Santiago Lets Ball and Third-Place Game Get Away, 79-57
Fullerton College’s pressing defense forced 25 turnovers and defeated Rancho Santiago, 79-57, Saturday in the third-place game of the Cypress men’s basketball tournament.
In the championship game, Los Angeles Harbor beat Santa Monica, 98-72.
Fullerton led, 40-37, at the half but Rancho Santiago closed the gap to 49-48 with 13:14 left.
Fullerton then went on a 10-0 run, aided by five Rancho Santiago turnovers, to take a 59-48 lead with 9:14 left.
Troy Joseph led Fullerton (9-4) with 25 points; Geoffrey Adams scored 14 and Roy Joseph 12.
Tony Smalley led Rancho Santiago (12-4) with 22 points. Alonzo Jamison, who has been averaging 20 points per game, was held to 9 before fouling out with 1:44 left in the game.
In other Cypress tournament games:
Cypress 107, Washington Clark 102 (2 OTs)--Kris Brodowski scored a career-high 32 points and Jim Sammonn added a career-high 30 for Cypress (12-3) in the consolation championship game.
Brodowski made a 10-foot jump shot with three seconds left in regulation to tie the score, 87-87.
Brodowski had a chance to win the game at the end of the first regulation. But he made only one of two free-throw attempts with 2 seconds left and the teams went to the second overtime tied, 94-94.
Greg Spruell scored on a tap-in rebound to put Cypress ahead, 102-100, with 41 seconds left in the second overtime. Spruell then made both ends of a one-and-one to give Cypress a 104-100 lead. Karl Becker made two free throws to give Cypress a 106-100 lead with nine seconds left.
In the Riverside Tournament:
Saddleback 65, San Bernardino Valley 34--Saddleback won its third straight game on the strength of an 18-0 run in the first half to win the consolation championship at Riverside Community College. Vincent Smalls led Saddleback (9-6) with 19 points and 8 rebounds. Joe Hudson added 18 points and Renny Ingram 10.
Saddleback held San Bernardino Valley scoreless for 8 minutes 11 seconds as it broke from a 9-9 tie to a 27-9 lead in the first half. San Bernardino Valley is 6-7.
In the Glendale Tournament:
Orange Coast 74, West L.A. 72 (OT)--Dareck Crane hit a 15-foot jump shot with one second remaining in overtime, and scored a career-high 21 points, to lead the Pirates (10-6) at Glendale.
Ed McKinney of West Los Angeles scored the game-tying basket (63-63) with three seconds remaining in regulation to send the game into overtime.
In the College of Sequoias Tournament:
Golden West 81, Porterville 79 (double OT)--Markus Muller-Stach made two free throws with five seconds remaining to lift Golden West in the consolation championship at Visalia.
Muller-Stach (a game-high 23 points), Albert Davis (14) and Doug McCuster (10) combined to lead Godlen West.
In women’s basketball:
Golden West 92, Cuesta 61--Kathy Werth scored 20 points and had 10 rebounds to lead the Rustlers (12-1) in the Cuesta Tournament at San Luis Obispo.
