Wittenberg Named Site for 1989, 1990 Division III Men’s Basketball Finals

Wittenberg University has been named the host site for the 1989 and 1990 NCAA Division III men’s basketball finals, it was announced Tuesday.

The selection was officially approved by the NCAA’s Executive Committee at its Dec. 7 meeting upon recommendation by the Div. III Basketball Committee. Dates for the tournament are March 17-18, 1989, and March 16-17, 1990.

David Jacobs, athletic director of Whittier (Calif.) College and chairman of the basketball committee also announced that the tournament field will be expanded from 32 to 40 teams beginning in 1989.

Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Mich., has been the host for the past six years and will again be the site in 1988. Albright College in Reading, Pa., and Augustana College, Rock Island, Ill., have also served as tournament sites.

The Div. III finals will be held in Wittenberg’s 3,000-seat Health, Physical Education and Recreation Center, opened in December of 1982.

Wittenberg has previously hosted seven Div. III football playoff games, five Div. III Great Lakes Regional basketball tournaments, four quarter-final tournament games and two Div. III golf tournaments.
