MacLean, DeLaittre Combine for 61 as Simi Valley Buries Bonanza, 90-67
Don MacLean scored 33 points and Shawn DeLaittre added 28 to power Simi Valley High School to a 90-67 victory over Bonanza of Las Vegas, Nev., Monday night in the semifinals of the Eldorado tournament.
Simi Valley (8-0) advanced to today’s championship against Bishop Gorman of Las Vegas (6-1), which defeated Chaparral, 95-61, Monday.
MacLean (6-10) and DeLaittre (6-5), both seniors and three-year starters, combined for all 16 first-quarter points as the Pioneers took a 16-8 lead.
Simi Valley increased the lead to 35-19 before Bonanza (5-2) staged a mild comeback, cutting the margin to 35-26 with two minutes to play in the half.
But guard Butch Hawking, who had 18 points, tossed in five consecutive points to push the Pioneers’ advantage to 42-26 at halftime.
Simi Valley increased its lead to 53-27 midway through the third quarter as DeLaittre scored eight unanswered points.
Bonanza (5-2) whittled the margin to 64-47 late in the quarter, but Hawking’s half-court shot at the buzzer gave the Pioneers a 67-47 lead.
