College Basketball Roundup : Santa Barbara Defeats North Carolina State

Brian Shaw scored 22 points, grabbed 20 rebounds and added 10 assists Wednesday night, helping UC Santa Barbara remain undefeated with a 96-78 victory over North Carolina State.

Shaw, a senior, recorded the third triple-double of his career. Santa Barbara’s 7-0 record equals its best-ever start.

Gary Gray hit all 6 of his shots from the floor and finished with 16 points for the Gauchos. Carlton Davenport added 15 for Santa Barbara.

Chuckie Brown had 22 points and 7 rebounds for the Wolfpack (3-2).

Santa Barbara led, 45-39, at halftime before the Gauchos built a 17-point lead with 11:50 to play. N.C. State trimmed the lead to 75-69 on a basket by Charles Shackleford with 6:24 left, but Santa Barbara scored the next 7 points.

Oklahoma 109, Virginia 61--Harvey Grant and Stacey King scored 20 points each, and Oklahoma began the second half with a 27-0 spurt as the 12th-ranked Sooners defeated Virginia in the round-robin Chaminade tournament at Honolulu.

Oklahoma’s defense forced Virginia to commit 33 turnovers, 24 in the second half. The Sooners only had 9 turnovers.

Mookie Blylock scored 17 points, and Tyrone Jones added 15 for the Sooners (8-0). Bill Batts scored 12 points to lead Virginia, which dropped to 4-5.

In another game at Honolulu, sophomore center Alec Kessler scored a career-high 23 points, and Willie Anderson added 21 as the Georgia Bulldogs held off La Salle, 79-71.

Memphis State 87, Alcorn State 64--Rodney Douglas scored 20 points and grabbed 6 rebounds at Memphis to lead the 20th-ranked Tigers to their sixth victory in seven starts.

Douglas hit on 10 of 14 shots from the field, and in one stretch late in the first half scored 8 of the Tigers’ 10 points.

Memphis State outscored the Braves, 27-5, midway through the second half to decide it. Alcorn State dropped to 1-9.

St. Bonaventure 63, Illinois State 61--Rich McCormick hit a five-foot shot with two seconds left to give the Bonnies the championship of the Gator Bowl tournament at Jacksonville, Fla.

Pat Allen scored 24 points and 46 in two games to earn the most valuable player award. Allen hit 11 of 12 shots against Illinois State and a tournament-record 22 of 25 in two games.

Boston University beat Jacksonville, 75-69, in the consolation game.

Arkansas 80, Alabama 55--Ron Huery scored eight points during the opening minutes, and Andrew Lang intimidated Alabama as the Razorbacks knocked off the Crimson Tide at Little Rock, Ark.

Huery’s five-foot bank shot with less than five minutes gone in the game put Arkansas ahead, 15-2, and Alabama never got closer than 11. Lang’s defense keyed the spurt.

Arkansas improved to 8-1 with its seventh straight victory. Alabama is 6-3.

Texas Christian 65, Grambling 56--John Lewis, who scored 18 points, combined with Tim Chase for a second-half comeback that gave the Horned Frogs the victory at Fort Worth.

The Horned Frogs improved to 5-3, while Grambling, on the final leg of a seven-day road swing, fell to 1-5.

TCU was trailing, 33-27, shortly after halftime when Chase hit three straight shots--two following steals and the third after a rebound--and made a free throw after being fouled on the latter. That drew the Frogs to within one, 35-34. Then Lewis made a steal and hit two baskets to put TCU ahead for good.

DePaul 93, Texas San Antonio 82--Rod Strickland scored 21 points and Kevin Edwards added 19 at Rosemont, Ill., as the Blue Demons raised their record to 7-2.

The Blue Demons let an 11-point halftime lead shrink to 1 point before a 15-2 spurt midway through the second half put them comfortably ahead.

The Roadrunners of the Trans America Athletic Conference suffered their second straight road loss after Monday night’s pounding by No. 7 Syracuse. Texas San Antonio is 4-3.

Tennessee 84, Furman 66--Clarence Swearengen scored 13 of his season-high 17 points in the second half to spark this rout at Knoxville, Tenn.
