Obituaries : Actor Kurt Richards; Also Performed as Jonathan Kidd

A longtime character actor who called himself Kurt Richards on the Broadway stage but became Jonathan Kidd at the behest of a motion picture producer, has died in Good Samaritan Hospital after surgery for an aorta aneurysm. He was 73 when he died Dec. 15, the Actors’ Fund reported Thursday.

As Richards, he was seen in 16 Broadway productions, including “Anastasia,” “Come Back Little Sheba,” “My Sister Eileen,” “King Lear,” “A Streetcar Named Desire,” “Hamlet,” “Julius Caesar” and “Burlesque.” He also was seen as Kidd portraying Father Mignon in the Center Theatre Group’s production of “The Devils” at the Mark Taper Forum in 1967, the theater’s dedicatory year.

When he went to Hollywood it was as Jonathan Kidd, and he was seen in “Wink of an Eye,” “Macabre,” “Can Can,” “The One and Only Genuine, Original Family Band” and “Operation Eichmann.”

He also was billed as Kidd in such TV series as “Perry Mason,” “Sea Hunt,” “Mannix,” “Rawhide,” “Dr. Kildare” and “General Hospital.”

He left no survivors. Contributions in his name may be made to the Actors’ Fund of America.
