Cleveland Coasts to 93-65 Victory but Braswell Remains Dissatisfied

Bob Braswell is a tough man to please.

After Cleveland High demolished Jordan, 93-65, in the first round of the Chaminade tournament, the Cavaliers’ coach was anything but happy.

“Basically, we stunk,” Braswell said. “People will look at the scoreboard and see 93-65 and think I’m being arrogant, but I’m just not happy with the way we played tonight. It was ugly.”

Cleveland (5-2), tournament runner-up to Fairfax the past two years, started slowly and fell behind, 7-2, in the first period. But the Cavaliers rallied to take a 16-14 lead by the end of the quarter and things got ugly for Jordan from that point on.

Lucious Harris scored nine of his game-high 25 points in the second period as Cleveland surged to a 43-27 halftime edge.

It was 64-44 after three periods, and the Cavaliers twice built their advantage to 30 points in the fourth quarter before Braswell sent in the substitutes.

Sharpshooting guard Adonis Jordan scored 23 points for Cleveland, 19 in the second half. Damon Charlot added 13 points and Damon Greer had 10.

Cleveland committed 22 turnovers but pressed Jordan (4-3) into 29 miscues. The Cavaliers outrebounded Jordan, 47-30.

“We’d like to come out and win this tournament,” Braswell said, “but if we’re going to beat some of the better teams, we’re going to have to play a lot better than this.”

Cleveland plays St. Patrick at 4 p.m. Monday.

St. Patrick 58, Chaminade 49--St. Patrick (3-7) led, 31-24, at the half and held Chaminade to two points for the first five minutes of the third period as it built a commanding 42-26 lead.

“We played their tempo and we were too out of control,” Chaminade Coach Mike Lynn said.

Chaminade (4-2) was led by Alex Rigolizzo with 13 points and Steve Hurdle with 11. The Eagles meet Jordan on Monday at 2:30 p.m. in a consolation-bracket game.

Burbank 39, Chatsworth 35--Mike Nash led Burbank with 13 points and nine rebounds. Dan Shaw had six assists for Burbank (7-2), which plays Gardena on Monday. Rick Garrick led Chatsworth with 14 points.

In other first-round games, Crossroads edged Masada, 66-62, and Dorsey defeated Santa Paula, 112-50.
