Saddleback’s Brummel Gets Record Win : Triumph Over Tustin Marines Gives Coach His 137th Victory

Bill Brummel became the winningest men’s basketball coach in Saddleback College history Sunday night when the Gauchos defeated the Tustin Marines, 90-62, in the opening round of the Rancho Santiago tournament.

Brummel, who started coaching at Saddleback in 1980, improved his career record to 137-88, one victory more than Bill Mulligan, who had a 136-31 record from 1975 to 1980. Mulligan is now the head coach at UC Irvine.

Saddleback was led by sophomore forward Vincent Smalls, who scored 24 points and had 8 assists. Smalls was 11 of 13 from the field.

Renny Ingram added 14 points, Terrell Malone had 12 and Jason Turner scored 11 for Saddleback. Turner was 5 of 5 from the field, including a three-pointer.

The 90 points Saddleback scored was a season high. Saddleback’s previous high came in a 70-53 victory over Grossmont. Saddleback also shot a season-high 54%, hitting 38 of 70.

Saddleback (10-7), which has won four straight, plays Santa Monica in one semifinal game at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Tustin (9-7) plays Fullerton in one consolation semifinal game at 2 p.m. Tuesday.

In other first-round games:

Santa Monica 66, Fullerton 62--Beshawn Pullard scored 14 points to lead Santa Monica in the first-round game. Derek Bell scored 12 and Cortney Abel 11 for Santa Monica (12-4).

Darrin Queen scored 16 points and Troy Joseph 15 for Fullerton (12-5).

In nonconference women’s play:

Cypress 82, Arizona Glendale 57--Venetta Dorlis scored 20 points as all five Cypress starters scored in double figures in the victory at home. Dorlis, a sophomore guard, was 9 of 10 from the field and had 8 rebounds. Karen Caires, also a sophomore guard, had 18 points and 8 assists for Cypress.

Vicki Silva scored 16 points and had 18 rebounds, Janene Allen scored 12 points and Jeanette Dorsey had 10 points for Cypress.
