Boys’ Prep Basketball Roundup : Parker, Cantrell Lead Tustin Victory

Leo Parker scored 16 points and Brad Cantrell 14 to lead Tustin High School to an 85-35 victory over Ontario Monday night in the second round of the Nogales tournament at Nogales High School.

The Tillers (8-3) led, 37-18, at halftime and then outscored Nogales, 27-3 in the third quarter.

Tustin will play Nogales tonight at 8:30.

In the championship round of the Canyon tournament:

Esperanza 62, Canyon 50--Gary Brushwyler had 16 points, Rob Nay 13 and Roger Weems 12 to lead the Aztecs. Esperanza led, 33-29, at halftime, but outscored the Comanches, 10-4 in the third quarter. Ralph Pacheco scored 14 points for Canyon. Esperanza plays McAteer tonight at 7:30 in a semifinal game.

McAteer 56, Bolsa Grande 49--Jody Daggs scored 18 points to lead McAteer. Connie Epperson had 17 points for the Matadors. Bolsa Grande plays Canyon today at 3:30.

Carson 71, Trabuco Hills 54--Gregory Lindsey scored 18 points for Carson, which plays Lynwood in a semifinal game today at 5:30. John Barnes had 16 points and Chad Gilbert 13 for Trabuco Hills, which plays Villa Park at 1:30.

Lynwood 69, Villa Park 44--The Wood was led by Louis Williams, who scored 27 points. Lynwood led, 20-6, at the end of the first quarter and were never challenged. Steve Waldrip scored 19 points for the Spartans.

In the consolation round:

Newport Harbor 56, East Bakersfield 49--The Sailors (8-4) outscored East Bakersfield, 18-8, in the first quarter and 19-6 in the final quarter and never let East Bakersfield within four points.

Forward Jim Geerlings led the team with 12 points and center Tyler Koon scored 11 points. Mike Hardin scored nine points, all from the free throw line and Mike Nguyen added nine points and six rebounds. Forward Don Wallin led East Bakersfield with 11 points. Newport Harbor will meet Apple Valley today at 11:30 in a consolation quarterfinal.

Los Amigos 65, Anaheim 48--Carlos Palomino scored 23 points and John Jenkins 15 for the Lobos, who jumped out to a 14-4 lead in the first quarter. Alvaro Osuna had 18 points and Marcus Mitchell 17 for the Colonists. Los Amigos plays Pomona in the consolation semifinals today at 9:30.

Pomona 77, Magnolia 65--Ny Bradford scored 30 points to lead Pomona. Mike Goff had 26 points and Richard McKee 16 for the Sentinels.

In the Honolulu tournament:

El Toro 94, St. Joseph Hilo 61--Khari Johnson scored 22 points and Bret Johnson scored 11 and had 12 assists for El Toro (8-2) in the opening round. Rob Johnson added 14 for El Toro, which plays host St. Louis at 8 tonight.

In the Las Vegas tournament:

Santa Ana 70, Monessen 69--Bobby Joyce had 29 points, 12 rebounds and 12 blocked shots to lead the Saints (11-2) in a second-round consolation game. Monessen had a chance to win the game in the last five seconds, but Joyce blocked a shot.
