High School Basketball : Shot at Buzzer Lifts Chaminade, 57-55

Steve Hurdle scored only six points, but his last three came at the buzzer and gave Chaminade a 57-55 victory over host Harvard in a Santa Fe League opener Tuesday night.
Hurdle’s three-pointer came after Harvard’s Bob Hillman missed the front end of a one-and-one free-throw opportunity with six seconds left and the Saracens leading, 55-54.
Harvard (2-5) had taken the lead with a minute left when Geoff Given made two free throws. The Saracens, who trailed, 26-17, at halftime, outscored Chaminade, 30-24, in the final period.
“We just played one quarter well tonight,” Harvard Coach Greg Hillard said. “We played poorly in the other three.”
Andy Connolly scored a game-high 15 points for Chaminade (5-5).
Reserve center Scott Wood led Harvard with 12 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Given and teammate Charles Patton each scored 10.
Burroughs 76, Nogales 72--A stifling half-court zone trap keyed Burroughs’ comeback victory in a nonleague game at Nogales.
Burroughs (6-7) trailed, 40-26, midway through the second quarter but outscored Nogales, 42-26, in the second half. The Indians had a 25-14 advantage in the final period.
Burroughs was led by sophomore Eddie Hill and junior Dan Murphy.
Hill scored a game-high 24 points on 10-of-16 shooting, including two three-pointers. Murphy scored 18 points, including 8 of 8 free throws. He was 7 of 7 in the fourth quarter.
Calabasas 58, Antelope Valley 55--Jon Drezner scored a game-high 33 points, including three free throws in overtime, to give Calabasas (6-9) a nonleague victory at Antelope Valley.
Sean Obusek hit two three-pointers during the final two minutes of regulation to tie the score, 51-51. Drezner missed a three-point shot with three seconds left.
Kevin Menteer made two free throws and a jump shot as Calabasas outscored Antelope Valley, 7-4, in overtime.
Calabasas overcame a 14-point deficit in the second half after being outscored, 22-7, in the second quarter.
Bell-Jeff 92, La Salle 41--Nick Sanderson had a game-high 21 points and eight rebounds to lead the Guards in a Santa Fe League opener at La Salle.
Henry Polee had 16 points and eight rebounds for Bell-Jeff (5-4, 1-0) and Chris Dyer added 12 points and eight assists.
Sylmar 48, Canyon 40--David Baker scored 17 points and Andre Robinson added 16 to lead Sylmar in a nonleague game at Saugus.
Brentwood 53, Providence 38--Mike Victor scored 17 points and Jeremy Lappen added 15 for Brentwood (9-3) in its Delphic League opener at home.
Providence (1-7), led by Peter Mirkovich’s 10 points, fell behind at the start of the second quarter and never recovered.
The Pioneers made 15 of 37 field-goal attempts and 8 of 20 free throws.
L.A. Baptist 69, Santa Paula 37--James Hoback had a game-high 21 points and 15 rebounds for L. A. Baptist in the nonleague game at Santa Paula.
Hoback converted 7 of 13 shots from the field and 7 of 8 free throws. Teammate Mike Wise added 18 points for L. A. Baptist (8-3).
Highland Hall 54, Newbridge 32--Craig Ernst scored 21 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for Highland Hall (4-4, 1-0 in league play) in its Westside League opener at home. Bob Ramirez added 16 points and eight assists for Highland Hall.
Faith Baptist 67, Campbell Hall 34--Jason Henderson scored a game-high 18 points to lead Faith Baptist to victory in its Delphic League opener at Campbell Hall.
Ribet Academy 59, Simi Lutheran 39--Simi Lutheran lost its Heritage League opener despite a game-high 14 points from Tim Camberg.
GIRLS
Burbank 73, La Canada 60--Jennifer Gomez scored 22 points, including nine during Burbank’s 30-point fourth quarter. Burbank, which trailed by 14 points early in the third quarter, outscored La Canada (7-4), 30-16, in the final period to win the nonleague game at Burbank. Christine Rumfola also scored 22 points for Burbank (8-3).
Royal 72, Westlake 53--Blanca Escobar had game-high totals of 28 points and 14 rebounds in the Marmonte League game at home.
Escobar, who entered the game averaging 14 points a game, made 11 of 18 shots from the field and 6 of 9 free throws.
Bell-Jeff 74, St. Genevieve 17--Hanh Tran scored a game-high 19 points to lead the Guards to a San Fernando Valley League victory at home. Carlyn Couch had 14 points and 15 rebounds for Bell-Jeff (8-8, 1-0) and Andja Vucurevic added 10 points.
Marymount 33, Chaminade 29--Kim Gutierrez scored 10 points for Chaminade (5-4), but the Eagles scored only four points in the fourth quarter in their nonleague game at home.
Montclair Prep 39, Pilgrim 29--Charis Kubrin scored 17 points and Lorie Oleesky added 12 for Montclair Prep (4-3) in their nonleague game at home.
Crossroads 42, Campbell Hall 37--Tracey Sylvester had 14 points, 12 rebounds and 6 assists for Campbell Hall (4-3, 0-1) in its Delphic League opener at Crossroads.
Buckley 36, Brentwood 9--Senior Laura Kirkpatrick had 22 points and 17 rebounds for Buckley (4-3) in its Delphic League opener at home. Buckley outscored Brentwood (0-9), 12-0, in the second quarter to take an 18-5 halftime lead.
