BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Lion Women Cagers Close Home Stand Against Northern Arizona Tonight

The Loyola Marymount women’s basketball team ends its long home stand and non-conference schedule at 7:30 tonight against Northern Arizona University. The Lions are 10-4, which matches the school’s record victory total. Freshman guards Kristen Bruich and Lynn Flanagan lead with scoring averages of 12.3. Center Tricia Gibson is the leading rebounder at 6.6 per game, and forward Amy Atkinson is among conference free-throw leaders with a percentage of .781 (25 of 32).

The Cal State Dominguez Hills women’s basketball team plays host to Rhode Island College at 6 p.m. Sunday. The Lady Toros, 4-8, play one more non-conference game Thursday at home against Biola before opening California Collegiate Athletic Assn. play next week at Chapman. Nobody is averaging double figures for the Lady Toros, but six players are averaging more than six points, led by injured Michelle Jennings at 9.4, Maria Elzy at 8.9 and Angel Wells and Kathy Goggin at 8.8.

The team has played better since freshmen Devon Akita and Carolyn Osato were added to the lineup. In the last five games, Akita has blocked 9 shots and made 16 steals, and Osato has 14 steals. Akita scored 19 points in her first collegiate start against UC Santa Barbara.

The South Coast Conference basketball showdown tonight between host El Camino College and Compton has been moved to the Warriors’ south gymnasium because of a conflict with a high school tournament in the school’s north facility.

Game time is 7:30.

In a preseason tournament, Compton (14-4) handed El Camino its only loss of the season. El Camino (17-1) is ranked second in the state among community colleges. The Warriors opened conference play Wednesday with a stunning 101-69 rout of Long Beach City College.

Eighth-ranked Compton defeated Golden West, 91-77.

“It’s like playing on a neutral court,” said El Camino Coach Paul Landreaux of the site change.

The Cal State Dominguez Hills men’s basketball team will be at home against Athletes in Action at 7:30 Saturday night in an exhibition basketball game.

Dominguez Hills is coming off a disappointing road trip with losses to Grand Canyon College (83-75) and Southern Utah State (85-73).

AIA (16-8) ends a month off tonight at Cal State Los Angeles.

Former Carson High School star Wally Rank is expected to play for AIA.

Dominguez Hills is led by 6-foot, 7-inch junior center Anthony Blackmon. He leads the team in scoring (16.7 a game) and rebounding (7.2).

Hawthorne 31, Inglewood 29--In an Ocean League opener at Inglewood, Hawthorne took advantage of 33 free throws, hitting 9 of 13 in the fourth quarter. Overall, the Cougars hit 16 foul shots to improve to 7-6. Inglewood is 6-6.
