THE PREPS : Girls’ Basketball Roundup : Millat Scores 37 to Lead Woodbridge to Victory

Kathy Millat scored a single-game school-record 37 points to lead Woodbridge High School to a 74-33 victory over Costa Mesa Thursday in a Pacific Coast League girls’ basketball game at Costa Mesa.

Millat was 17 of 19 from the floor. She broke Woodbridge’s previous record of 33 set by guard Randee Mahoney earlier this season against Buena Park.

Millat also had 14 rebounds and 6 steals. Lisa Wehren scored 11 points and had 8 rebounds, 6 steals and 5 assists and Kristy Meekins had 8 points but 13 rebounds for Woodbridge (14-4, 2-0). Woodbridge used a full-court press to take a 26-9 lead at the end of the first quarter.

In other Pacific Coast League games:

Laguna Beach 45, Laguna Hills 33--Liz Watford (22 points) and Katie Stal (17) combined for 39 points to lead Laguna Beach (7-4, 1-1) at Laguna Hills. Christy Grebel scored 18 points and had 20 rebounds for Laguna Hills (2-9, 0-2).

In the Angelus League:

Mater Dei 80, St. Paul 39--Five players scored in double figures for Mater Dei, which won at home. Cori Martin scored 17 points and had 7 rebounds, Kelly O’Brien had 16 points and 6 rebounds, and Janet Renssing had 11 points and had 6 steals for Mater Dei (13-5, 3-0). Claudia Morris and Stacy Mounce had 10 points each for Mater Dei.

Shannon Gray scored 24 for St. Paul (0-3).

In the Century League:

Santa Ana Valley 62, Villa Park 27--Francesca Rumps scored 30 points and had 18 rebounds for Santa Ana Valley at Villa Park. Maria Guerrero scored 16 for Santa Ana Valley (6-8, 1-1).

Foothill 56, Santa Ana 33--Tanya Fox scored 23 points and had 23 rebounds to lead Foothill at Santa Ana. Foothill (7-8, 2-0) led, 31-18, at the half.

In the Olympic League:

Valley Christian 52, Orange Lutheran 32--Valley Christian (13-2, 3-0) led, 33-12, at halftime, and cruised to the victory at Orange Lutheran. Orange Lutheran (7-5, 3-2) was led by Devon Koster and Pam Marty, who each scored 12 points. Koster had 17 rebounds.

In the Orange League:

Brea-Olinda 69, Anaheim 14--Susan Tousey scored 14 points and Cindy Gunn 12 to lead Brea-Olinda at Anaheim. Brea’s starters played 1 1/2 quarters as the Wildcats took a 45-7 lead at the half. Brea-Olinda, the top-ranked team in Orange County, is 14-1 overall and 2-0 in league.

Magnolia 61, Western 42--Dawn Borum, a 5-foot 11-inch forward, scored 34 points and had 21 rebounds to lead Magnolia at home. Rena Rossoll added 13 points and 10 rebounds for (7-7, 1-1).

In the Sea View League:

Estancia 31, Newport Harbor 22--Tracy Hoffman scored 10 points and had 15 and 3 steals to lead Estancia at Newport Harbor. Shawna Newbern scored only two points for Estancia (10-6, 1-1), but the 5-8 guard had 10 rebounds, 7 assists, 6 steals and 5 blocked shots. Newport Harbor (1-1) was led by Jenny Stucker who had nine points.

Tustin 36, University 34--Sherrie Crawford scored 20 points and had 13 rebounds to lead Tustin at University. University (5-8, 0-2) had a chance to tie the score, but Sandy Johnson missed a layup as time ran out after rebounding teammate Shelly Davis’ jump shot. University had seven players score, none in double figures.

In the South Coast League:

Capistrano Valley 68, Dana Hills 17--Holly Anderson and Shelley Zierhut scored 20 points each for Capistrano Valley, which won at Dana Hills. Julie Swain added 12 for Capistrano Valley (12-2, 2-0), which led, 39-11 at halftime.

El Toro 54, Mission Viejo 52--Kristen Bevis led El Toro (1-1) with 15 points. Mission Viejo (14-5, 1-1) was led by Tricia Stringham who had a game-high 23 points.
