San Jose State’s Kenny Jackson, voted the top offensive player in the 63rd East-West Shrine game, hopes NFL scouts were watching closely Saturday.

Jackson rushed 13 times for 65 yards to lead the West to a 16-13 victory, but he is unsure about his prospects after a collegiate career with an unranked team that got little national attention.

“I think I have a chance,” said the 6-foot, 200-pound running back. “I really won’t believe it until draft day comes. I just need the opportunity to show what I can do.”

Michigan State’s Lorenzo White rushed 11 times for 64 yards for the East as the defenses dominated this all-star charity game at Stanford Stadium.

Missouri’s Tom Whelihan kicked three field goals for the West, and Minnesota’s Chip Lohmiller kicked two for the East, although by agreement neither team tried to block field-goal attempts.

Linebacker Ken Harvey of California was named defensive player of the game as the West held the East to 89 yards passing.

Syracuse quarterback Don McPherson, winner of the Maxwell Award as the top college player in the country, threw a 21-yard pass to Marc Zeno of Tulane for the East’s only touchdown but had an otherwise miserable passing game, completing just 3 of 17 attempts for 60 yards with 1 interception.

San Jose State’s Mike Perez threw a three-yard pass to Darryl Franklin of Washington for the West’s only touchdown but finished with a sub-par 89 yards with 8 completions in 20 attempts.

The West now has a 32-26-5 record in the game.

A crowd estimated at 62,000 attended the game. Proceeds benefit the Shriners Hospitals for Crippled and Burned Children. Over the years, the game has raised more than $10 million for the hospitals.

Perhaps the player who most appreciated being in the game was placekicker Dan Murphy, a former patient at the Shriners’ hospital in San Francisco who was born with deformed arms and hands.

Murphy, from Sonoma State, kicked a point-after but missed a 22-yard field-goal attempt.
