Girls’ Basketball Roundup : Woodbridge Turns Laguna Hills’ Turnovers Into a 79-29 Romp

Woodbridge High School’s girls basketball team continued to prove its dominance of the Pacific Coast League Tuesday as it routed Laguna Hills, 79-29, at Woodbridge.

The Warriors (15-4, 3-0), who last week defeated Costa Mesa, 74-33, had even less trouble with Laguna Hills.

The Hawks (2-10, 0-3) provided Woodbridge with easy scoring opportunities from the start. Laguna Hills committed 3 turnovers in the game’s first three minutes and 12 in the first quarter, allowing the Warriors to take a 24-5 lead.

The Hawks, who committed 29 turnovers in the game, were behind at halftime, 39-16, and at the end of three quarters, 51-25. But the fourth quarter was even worse as Woodbridge outscored them, 28-4.

“It’s pretty obvious they’re not a year-round program,” Warrior Coach Eric Bangs said. “Overall, I’d say this game’s (outcome) wasn’t due to our offense, it was their (lack of) defense and ballhandling skills.”

Randee Mahoney scored 21 points and had 9 steals and Kathy Millat had 19 points and 8 steals for Woodbridge. Tami Williams added 10 points and Gina Krouse 10 rebounds.

Laguna Hills’ bright spot, center Christy Grebel, finished with 21 points and 14 rebounds.

“I thought the girls were playing scared,” said Renn Amstead, Laguna Hills coach. “They were psyched out.”
