Quakes Jolt Northern Australia
United Press International
CANBERRA, Australia —
Three powerful earthquakes registering up to 7.3 on the Richter scale rocked the northern outback region today, shaking buildings and causing frightened Aborigines to flee in panic.
The quakes were among the most powerful to strike Australia in the past 100 years, but there were no immediate reports of injuries or severe damage. The quakes--measuring in order 6.8, 7.3 and 7.0--were centered west of the central Northern Territory mining town of Tennant Creek.
