NBA Roundup : Nets Win on Road, End 26-Game String

Buck Williams scored 23 points as the New Jersey Nets ended their 26-game road losing streak with a 108-103 win over the Dallas Mavericks Monday night at Dallas.

“How sweet it is,” said Williams. “I haven’t felt this good at any time this season. Before the game tonight I predicted we’d win some games on this road trip (three games in Texas). It was just the law of averages and that we’ve played well against this team in the past.”

New Jersey, which lost its first 18 road games this season and its final 8 road games last season, hadn’t won away from home since March 18, 1987, at Detroit. The National Basketball Assn. record is 32 straight road losses by the 1953-54 Baltimore Bullets.

New Jersey got a triple-double performance from guard John Bagley who had 19 points, 10 assists and 10 rebounds. Roy Hinson also had 19 points for the Nets.

“This has been a long season, without a doubt,” Bagley said. “We’ve been undermanned, there were new players through trades, new coaches, lots of things. But right now the season doesn’t seem so long.”

Mark Aguirre led Dallas with 32 points and Roy Tarpley added 19.

Cleveland 94, Detroit 83--Ron Harper scored 23 points as the Cavaliers beat the Pistons at Richfield, Ohio.

The victory was the Cavaliers’ fourth straight, their longest winning streak this season, and put them over .500 for the first time since they won their first game this year. Cleveland’s 22-21 record is its best this late in the season in 10 years.

The Cavaliers held Isiah Thomas, the Pistons’ All-Star guard, to just nine points. Thomas made only 4 of 18 shots from the floor.

Cleveland guard Mark Price, who guarded Thomas, scored 20 points, 10 in the fourth quarter and John Williams had 20 points and 15 rebounds.

Indiana 90, Golden State 88--Vern Fleming hit two free throws with six seconds left as the Pacers edged the Warriors at Indianapolis.

With the game tied, 88-88, Indiana’s Chuck Person missed a shot and the Warriors’ Ralph Sampson rebounded but threw the ball away. Fleming came up with it and worked the clock to six seconds before being fouled on a drive by Winston Garland.

After his free throws, Sampson missed a 12-foot baseline jumper as time expired.

Garland led Golden State with 25 points and Terry Teagle added 16 points.

Utah 105, Seattle 100--Thurl Bailey scored 32 points and Karl Malone added 25 points and 11 rebounds as the Jazz beat the SuperSonics at Salt Lake City.

Dale Ellis led Seattle with 40 points, including 23 in the first half as the Sonics took a 52-49 lead at halftime.

Xavier McDaniel and Tom Chambers added 17 apiece for the Sonics.

Sacramento 97, Chicago 95--Chicago’s Michael Jordan scored 37 points, but Sacramento’s LaSalle Thompson blocked his layup with two seconds left to preserve the Kings’ win over the Bulls in Sacramento.

Reggie Theus led Sacramento with 28 points, including a 17-foot jumper with eight seconds left that broke a 95-95 tie.

After Theus’ tie-breaking shot, Jordan attempted to tie the score by driving down the left lane, but had his shot blocked by Thompson, Sacramento’s center who had a game-high 13 rebounds.

Jordan scored 14 of Chicago’s 18 points during the final six minutes.
