Notebook / Ray Ripton : Ex-Waves Baseball Coach Scolinos Wins Salute for His Winning Ways

John Scolinos, who coached Pepperdine baseball teams for 14 years and has coached Cal Poly Pomona for 17, has been commended by the County Board of Supervisors.

Supervisor Kenneth Hahn said Scolinos has made “exceptional contributions to baseball.

“He has 1,097 victories, the most of any active coach. He has averaged an extraordinary 27 wins a season for 40 years.”

At Pepperdine, Scolinos had 376 wins and 213 losses and took four teams to the NCAA playoffs. At Cal Poly his teams had won 721 games before this season and won three NCAA Division II championships and five titles in the California Collegiate Athletic Assn.

Hahn told the following story about Scolinos, the Dodgers and the Coliseum:

“When I was negotiating with Walter O’Malley to bring the Dodgers from Brooklyn, there was a problem concerning where the team would play until a stadium could be built.

“So I asked John Scolinos, who was the coach at Pepperdine, to meet me on the Coliseum field to determine if that stadium could be modified for baseball.

“He paced off the field and advised me what changes needed to be made. I was then able to make the case before the Coliseum Commission to allow the Dodgers to play there.

“The Dodgers set major league attendance records at the Coliseum with 93,103 for Roy Campanella Day and 92,706 for a 1959 World Series game.”

The father-son doubles team of Ernie and Chris Shoop of Pacific Palisades won the U. S. Tennis Assn. Fathers-Sons Indoor Championships last Sunday in Nashville, Tenn. Ernie, 50, and Chris, 25, defeated Peter and Van Lingen, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. Peter has played on South Africa’s Davis Cup teams.

Holes in one were scored at the Rancho Park Golf Course nine-hole layout by Bob Landry of West Los Angeles, Pierce Windebank of Pacific Palisades and Bud Gilbert and Mario Bisuitti of Brentwood.

Susie Casey of Beverly Hills and Michael Beyke shot aces at Penmar, and Tommy Cooper of Venice had a hole in one at Woodley.
