Tennis Roundup : Patty Fendick Upset Victim in New Zealand Tournament

Top-seeded Patty Fendick and No. 2 seeded Anne Minter, the 29th ranked player in the world, were upset Saturday in the semifinals of a $50,000 women’s tennis tournament at Wellington, New Zealand.

Unseeded Katrina Adams of Chicago ousted Fendick, 3-6, 7-6, 6-4, and will face Canadian Jill Hetherington, who beat Minter, 7-5, 2-6, 6-4.

Defending champion Sweden, Czechoslovakia and West Germany clinched first-round victories in Davis Cup competition.

Stefan Edberg and Anders Jarryd beat Kelly Evernden and David Lewis, 6-3, 7-5, 6-4, to clinch Sweden’s victory over New Zealand at Gavle, Sweden.

Sweden, which has won three of the last four Davis Cups, will play Czechoslovakia in April.

In Prague, Miloslav Mecir and Tomas Smid of Czechoslovakia beat Hugo Chapacu and Francisco Gonzales of Paraguay, 6-1, 7-5, 6-1.

In West Germany, Boris Becker and Patrick Kuehnen defeated Luiz Mattar and Ricardo Acioly of Brazil, 8-6, 15-13, 6-4.
