Stock car drivers Steve Moore and Michael Waltrip led the third and final round of time trials for Sunday’s Daytona 500. Moore was timed at 187.825 m.p.h. Waltrip was timed at 187.001.
Meanwhile, rookies Charlie Rudolph and Ernie Irvan collided during a practice run, with Rudolph’s car hurdling onto the infield grass. Richard Petty and Bobby Hillin banged together behind them, but none of the drivers were hurt and all of the cars, except Rudolph’s, are expected to be ready for the two 125- mile qualifying races Thursday. Irvan, in fact, came back to qualify following the accident at 186.780 m.p.h.
