Jodie Mudd and Richard Zokol each fired a six-under-par 66 Thursday to share the first-round lead in the $600,000 Hawaiian Open at Honolulu.

One shot behind the leaders in the race for the $108,000 first prize were Brad Bryant and Scott Simpson, last year’s U.S. Open and Greater Greensboro Open winner.

Rocco Mediate led a group of six golfers at 68. Mediate put together seven birdies in the last 10 holes to overcome a shaky start that included four bogeys in the first eight holes.

“I was really lucky to shoot 66,” Mudd said. “I chipped in once, holed a bunker shot and made two 50-footers.”

Liselotte Neumann, a Ladies Professional Golf Assn. rookie but a three-year veteran of the European tour, shot an 8-under-par 64 to grab a four-shot lead after the first round of a $225,000 tournament at Sarasota, Fla.

Neumann, a 21-year-old resident of Finspang, Sweden, had six birdies and an eagle as she pulled away from the 144-player field over the par-72, 6,124-yard Bent Tree Country Club layout.

Tied for second place at 68 were 1982 champion Beth Daniel and Jan Stephenson.

New Zealand left-hander Bob Charles shot an eight-under-par 64 for a five-stroke first-round lead in the $350,000 PGA Seniors Championship at the PGA National Golf Club at Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

Gary Player, Orville Moody, Tommy Aaron, Al Geiberger, Larry Mowry, George Lanning and Harold Henning all shot 69s to share second place.
