A fire at a Pacific Beach residence late Friday caused about $350,000 damage to the dwelling but no injuries, a San Diego Fire Department spokesman said.

Twenty-five firefighters took 40 minutes to put out the blaze, which started about 11:30 p.m. The spokesman said that Zona Wahrenbrouk and her 16-year-old son, Mark, were awakened by crackling, popping sounds at the front of the house.

A smoke detector sounded shortly afterward, the spokesman said. The family ran out into the back yard, where they were aided by neighbors.

Firefighters found the roof of the 2,500-square-foot house engulfed in flames. Damage was estimated at $250,000 to the structure and $100,000 to the contents.

Arson investigators said the blaze, which they described as accidental, started when materials in the garage caught fire.
