Chapman’s Fast Start Enough to Beat Cal Poly SLO, 76-61

Chapman College outscored Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, 25-6, in the first 10 minutes and coasted to a 76-61 California Collegiate Athletic Assn. men’s basketball victory Saturday at home.
Chapman (5-5, 14-9) shot 77% in the first half, compared to 27% for the Mustangs.
Cal Poly made only two of its first 16 shots from the field and ended up shooting only 38% for the game. Chapman who 65%.
Kelly Huston led the Panthers with a game-high 24 points, Russ Ortega added 17 and Andy Stensgard went 6 for 6 from the field for 13 points. Mark Shelby, Jeff Gray and Coby Naess had 10 points each for Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (7-3, 14-7).
The victory knocked Cal Poly San Luis Obispo out of its first-place tie with Cal State Bakersfield, which defeated Cal State Dominguez Hills, 63-46, Saturday.
The Panthers moved into a fourth-place tie with Cal State Northridge, a 63-55 loser to UC Riverside Saturday.
