College Highlights : Santa Clara Outburst Buries Northridge

Santa Clara scored 15 runs in the fourth inning en route to a 21-7 nonconference baseball victory over Cal State Northridge on Tuesday at Matador Field.

Santa Clara (9-2) sent 19 batters to the plate in the 38-minute inning and had 9 hits, 5 walks and 4 unearned runs. The Matadors used four pitchers in an attempt to slow the Broncos, who set a record for most runs scored in an inning by a CSUN opponent.

Santa Clara’s Ed Giovanola hit a single and a double, drove in three runs and scored twice in the inning. Teammate Troy Buckley was 2 for 4 with 5 RBIs for the game.

The Matadors’ Scott Strickland, a freshman shortstop, hit his first home run and freshman Randy Thompson added another for CSUN (2-6), which plays at Cal State Fullerton at 2:30 this afternoon.

BASEBALL

The Master’s 12, Redlands 7--Catcher Tod Skinner hit for the cycle and David Black pitched 4 innings of shutout relief to lead the Mustangs to a nonconference victory at Master’s.

Skinner, a 5-10 senior, was 4 for 5 with 3 RBIs and 2 runs. Teammate Mark MacArthur hit a grand slam to cap a seven-run fourth inning, and Black picked up his first save for Master’s (3-3) by allowing 2 hits while striking out 4.

Long Beach City 5, Valley 4--Long Beach scored the go-ahead run on an error and two singles in the eighth inning of a nonconference game at Long Beach.

The Monarchs’ Joey Kane, who gave up 6 hits and 2 walks while striking out 9 in 7 innings, took the loss. Valley, which committed five errors, dropped to 2-3.

Compton 10, Mission 6--Robert Bradford was 3 for 4 with 3 RBIs, but Mission lost its nonconference game against Compton at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

Earl Meyers was also 3 for 4 for Mission (0-4).

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Biola 92, The Master’s 51--Biola, the No. 4-ranked team in the NAIA national poll, scored the first six points of the District III game at Master’s and was never challenged thereafter.

Johnny Griffin scored 13 of his game-high 20 points in the first 20 minutes of the game as Biola led, 46-21, at halftime.

Phil Hahn scored 15 points for Master’s (10-18, 6-8).

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Biola 68, The Master’s 48--Shelmarie Tatum scored 13 points and grabbed 13 rebounds as Master’s dropped an NAIA District III game to visiting Biola.

The Master’s (10-14, 4-8) also got 15 points from Kim Vargas, but the Mustangs were hurt by 22 turnovers.

MEN’S TENNIS

Pierce 7, Moorpark 2--Pierce swept all six singles matches in the Western State Conference match.

Bill Kersley, Sang Kim, Mauricio Quiroga, John Holiday, Tony Cohen and Kent Tinsley won matches for the Brahmas, the defending conference champions.

SOFTBALL

CS Fullerton 7-3, CS Northridge 2-2--Despite solid offensive efforts from three returning players, the Lady Matadors dropped a season-opening doubleheader at Cal State Fullerton.

Kim Bernstein was 2 for 3 in the first game and Beth Onestinghel and Pam Smith were 2 for 4 in the second game for the Lady Matadors. The Titans, a Division I team, improved to 4-0.

Reliever Tracey Fox took the loss in the first game, giving up 6 runs on 6 hits while striking out 1 and walking 1. Delanee Anderson suffered the loss in the second game.

The Master’s 13-13, Occidental 2-2--Beth Downey pitched a three-hitter in the first game and Tammy Melton tossed a two-hitter for Master’s in the second game of the season-opening nonconference doubleheader at Occidental.
