THE COLLEGES : Long Shots Allow Chapman to Recover to Defeat Pomona

Chapman College overcame a poor start, thanks to some impressive three-point field-goal shooting, and went on to defeat Cal Poly Pomona, 76-66, in a California Collegiate Athletic Assn. men’s basketball game Thursday at Pomona.

Cal Poly Pomona built a 22-14 lead with 11-32 left in the first half. But Chapman took the lead with three consecutive three-point baskets. Russ Ortega, a junior forward, made a three-point basket to cut the lead to 26-25 with 4:14 left in the first half. After a Cal Poly Pomona miss, Chapman’s Dave Roth, a sophomore guard from Orange High School, put Chapman ahead, 28-26, with 3:20 left on a baseline three-point basket.

Mike Minier, a junior forward from Saddleback College, then made a three-point basket to give Chapman a 31-26 lead with 2:50 left in the half. Chapman was 22 of 52 (42%) from the field but 9 of 14 (64%) on three-point baskets.

Roth had a game-high 21 points for Chapman (15-9, 6-5). Kelly Huston, a senior forward, scored 19 and had a game-high 11 rebounds, and Andy Stensgard had 10 points. Minier ended with seven points.

In the second half, Chapman’s biggest lead was 65-53 with four minutes left. Cal Poly Pomona cut it to 68-64 with 1:54 remaining but was never able to get closer.

Forrest Barnes scored 13 points and had 9 rebounds for Cal Poly Pomona (9-15, 4-7).
