College Basketball : Pullum Sparks UC Riverside to 71-68 Win Over Chapman

Maurice Pullum scored 19 points and Julius Thomas 15 to lead UC Riverside to a 71-68 victory over Chapman Saturday in a California Collegiate Athletic Assn. men’s basketball game at Chapman.

Chapman (15-10, 6-6) is tied with Cal State Northridge for fourth place and the final spot in the conference’s postseason tournament. Chapman travels to Northridge Thursday before closing out the season at Cal State Los Angeles Saturday.

In other games:

Pacific Christian 66, Life 55--Burton Lalk scored 20 points and had 18 rebounds to lead Pacific Christian (29-5) to the championship of the Western Christian Athletic Assn. Western regional tournament. Lalk was voted the tournament’s most valuable player.

Sam Updike of Life came into the game averaging 29 points but was held to 6 by PCC’s Burton Crayton. PCC’s Bill Edwards had two steals and two baskets in the final minute of the half to tie the score, 30-30.

In the Golden State Athletic Conference:

Westmont 87, Christ College Irvine 68--Brian Holt led five Westmont players in double figures with 18 points at Irvine. Mike Thompson led Christ College Irvine with 16 points. Westmont is 18-8 and 9-3. Christ College Irvine is 7-20 and 0-12.

Southern California 68, Azusa Pacific 67--Jeff Bickmore blocked a shot by Danny Scott with eight seconds left for host Southern California (15-13, 8-4). SCC trailed, 52-47, with seven minutes remaining but went on a 12-0 run to lead, 59-52, four minutes later. Todd Dixon scored 25, Bickmore 11 and Jim Mansfield 10 for SCC. Scott led Azusa Pacific (9-19, 6-6) with 19.
