Tennis Roundup : Fitzgerald Posts Upset of Lendl in Third Round at Philadelphia

John Fitzgerald of Australia, who last won a singles title in 1984, upset top-seeded Ivan Lendl, 7-6, 6-4, Thursday night in the third round of the $600,000 U.S. Pro Indoor championships at Philadelphia.

Lendl was visibly bothered by a match on an adjoining court and complained to the umpire at one point. He was also assessed a code violation for slamming his racket and complained about line calls.

Fitzgerald, seeded 16th, won the first-set tiebreaker, 7-3. Ranked 57th in the world, Fitzgerald broke Lendl at love in the seventh game of the second set and won the match in the 10th game at love.

Earlier, defending champion Tim Mayotte saved two match points as he posted a 5-7, 6-2, 7-5 victory over Johan Kriek.

In other third-round matches, Christo van Rensburg beat Paul Annacone, 6-1, 5-7, 6-4; Jorge Lozano upset Jim Pugh, 6-3, 6-7, 6-4; Kevin Curren defeated Marty Davis, 6-3, 6-3; Dan Goldie topped Joey Rive, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2; Sammy Giammalva beat Peter Lindgren, 6-3, 6-3, and Jim Grabb defeated Ken Flach, 6-2, 2-6, 7-5.

At Fairfax, Va., Martina Navratilova advanced to the quarterfinals of the $300,000 Virginia Slims of Washington tournament by eliminating Gigi Fernandez, 6-4, 6-3.

The top-seeded Navratilova advanced to tonight’s match against sixth-seeded Zina Garrison, who routed Jeri Ingram, 6-0, 6-2.

Navratilova has a 20-0 record against Garrison.

In other matches, defending champion Hana Mandlikova beat Terry Phelps, 7-5, 6-0; Gabriela Sabatini downed Nathalie Tauziat, 6-1, 7-6, and Helena Sukova defeated Soviet Larisa Savchenko, 6-4, 7-6.
