College Roundup : Seeburger’s 2 RBIs Pace UC Irvine

John Seeburger went 5 for 5, with 2 doubles and 2 runs-batted in Friday, to lead UC Irvine to an 8-3 victory over Chapman in a nonconference baseball game at Irvine.

Irvine (9-9-1) scored four runs in the third inning to take a 5-1 lead. Jeff Oberdank and Marcus Robinson led off the inning with singles. Seeburger then doubled, scoring Oberdank, to break the tie.

Rob Johnson pitched seven innings to pick up the victory. Dave Cantrell (0-2) took the loss. Oberdank went 3 for 5. Brian Beals went 3 for 6 for Chapman (6-9-1).

CS Fullerton 7, United States International 0--Sophomore Mark Beck went the distance, striking out 11 and allowing just 6 hits, to lead host Fullerton (9-6) to its fourth straight victory. Keith Kaub went 3 for 4, with a solo home run and 2 RBIs to lead Fullerton. USIU is 3-8-1.

In softball:

Cal State Fullerton 6-6, Cal State Dominguez Hills 0-1--Cathi Hall singled home Missy Coombs to break a 1-1 tie in the second game at Dominguez Hills and start a five-run rally by Fullerton. In the first game, Charis Monroe led the Titans (13-1) with two triples and three runs.

Chapman 1, San Francisco State 0--Relief pitcher Sherry Schreck stranded the tying run in the top of the seventh inning to preserve the victory for Chapman (12-4) in the first round of the championship bracket of the Chico State tournament. Schreck replaced winning pitcher Jackie Blake (5-1) with one out and a runner at third and got the next two batters to pop up.

In men’s gymnastics:

CS Fullerton 278.35, Michigan 266.60--Host Fullerton (8-6), ranked 14th in the nation, got a strong performance from Bill Barham, who won the all-around with a score of 56.15.

In women’s gymnastics:

CS Fullerton 185.95, Michigan 180.95--Lisa Dolan won the all-around with a score of 37.95, as host Fullerton (7-6) had its highest score of the season.

In men’s tennis:

UC Irvine 6, Michigan 3--Mark Kaplan defeated Dan Goldberg, who reached the final of the NCAA tournament last year, 7-5, 6-3, to pace UC Irvine, ranked 10th in the nation, over Michigan, ranked eighth.

In the Nevada Las Vegas tournament:

McNeese State 6, Chapman 0--McNeese State improved its record to 8-0 with a victory in a first round match.

Chapman 6, US International 2--In their consolation quarterfinal, Chapman (4-4) got singles victories from Miles Walker, Olivier Amerlinck, Paul Charlesworth and Barry Hancock.

In women’s tennis:

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 9, Chapman 0--Amy Lansford defeated Michelle Dobeck, 6-1, 6-4, as host Cal Poly San Luis Obispo swept Chapman (0-7).

Mt. St. Mary’s 5, Christ College Irvine 2--Katlin Jaffarian defeated Anne Kriangel, 6-1, 6-1 to lead Mt. St. Mary’s at Christ College Irvine.
