College Basketball Roundup : Syracuse Wins, Faces Pitt for Title Sunday

Rony Seikaly scored on a reverse layup with 1:25 to play as No. 12 Syracuse edged Villanova, 71-69, in a Big East Conference game Tuesday night at Syracuse.

The Orangemen, 22-7 overall and 11-4 in the Big East, trail Pittsburgh by a half-game. The teams meet for the conference title Sunday. Pittsburgh faces Seton Hall tonight.

Syracuse was led by Sherman Douglas with 17 points. Stephen Thompson added 15 points, and Seikaly finished with 13 points, 16 rebounds and 3 blocked shots, including two in the final four minutes. Doug West scored 17 points for Villanova (18-11, 9-7).

Xavier 93, Niagara 80--Center Tyrone Hill scored a career-high 30 points to lead 20th-ranked Xavier of Ohio over the Purple Eagles at Niagara Falls, N.Y.

The victory was Musketeers’ 12th straight as they improved to 23-3. Xavier was ranked in the top 20 this week for the first time in 28 years.
